Publisher Comments

An unforgettable novel about finding a lost piece of yourself in someone else.

Khaled Hosseini, the #1 New York Times–bestselling author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, has written a new novel about how we love, how we take care of one another, and how the choices we make resonate through generations. In this tale revolving around not just parents and children but brothers and sisters, cousins and caretakers, Hosseini explores the many ways in which families nurture, wound, betray, honor, and sacrifice for one another; and how often we are surprised by the actions of those closest to us, at the times that matter most. Following its characters and the ramifications of their lives and choices and loves around the globe — from Kabul to Paris to San Francisco to the Greek island of Tinos — the story expands gradually outward, becoming more emotionally complex and powerful with each turning page.

Review

"Like [Hosseini's] previous books, the new novel is a complex mosaic, a portrait of the Afghan diaspora as it is folded into the West and of those left behind....The book is elevated by a strong sense of parable and some finely drawn characters and is inventively constructed as it leaps from voice to voice." Esquire

Review

"A book we can't wait for in 2013... [Hosseini] broadens the scope with a multigenerational family saga that takes place in locations around the world." Entertainment Weekly

Review

"Hosseini returns with an instantly relatable novel that follows generations of a troubled family across the Middle East." Marie Claire

Review

"The beautiful writing, full of universal truths of loss and identity, makes each section a jewel...Hosseini's eye for detail and emotional geography makes this a haunting read." Publishers Weekly

Review

"Captivating and affecting....A masterful and compassionate storyteller, Hosseini traces the traumas and scarring of tyranny, war, crime, lies, and illness in the intricately interconnected, heartbreaking, and transcendent lives of his vibrantly realized characters to create a grand and encompassing tree of life." Booklist (starred review)

Review

"Hosseini weaves a gorgeous tapestry of disparate characters joined by threads of blood and fate....In this uplifting and deeply satisfying book, Hosseini displays an optimism not so obvious in his previous works. Readers will be clamoring for it." Library Journal (starred review)

Review

"In And the Mountains Echoed, Khaled Hosseini presents a multitude of windows into the souls affected by these events. The novel's rich kaleidoscope of images coalesces around one theme: the powerful and often excruciating legacy of family ties within the maelstrom of history." Shelf Awareness

Review

"Fiction Top Pick....Engrossing....Ultimately, And the Mountains Echoed is about the human endeavor to transcend difference." Bookpage

Hosseini's writing seems to get better with each book, and his stories more involved. This novel, set in Afghanistan, Paris and California, centers on Abdullah and Pari, siblings in a small impoverished village in Afghanistan. The history of Afghanistan provides the backdrop for the book. From there, the story branches out to extend to other family members over time and place. We see how actions affect others and choices that are made change lives. The characters are deeply developed and the stories emotional. A very satisfying read!

This is the first book I've read by this author and I finished it wanting more. Each story is filled with both sadness and joy - much like life. With each story told we are reminded of how the choices we make in life direct our paths and how our choices affect others. The author expertly weaves the stories together and made me feel strongly for the characters he created - some I loved and rooted for and others I loathed. Excellent story, writing and character development.

This novel and the stories it tells is going to be echoing in me for days to come. Hosseini wields a facile pen and I loved his characterizations. I felt a connection with each of the characters and Abdulla and Par's loss tugged at my heartstrings throughout the reading experience. It is amazing how the story transcends generations and continents and yet each is bound to the other by a powerful thread. Hosseini's characters, yes every one of them, spoke to me and I felt, exclusively to me. For example, when Markos realizes that "the world didn't see the inside of you, that it didn't care a whit about the hopes and dreams, and sorrows, that lay masked by skin and bone," while thinking of Thalia, I could not but help comparing similar situations that I knew of. Afghans, French, Americans, Greeks, each has a reason to identify with this book, but more importantly every reader in the world will. A book you must own and keep on re-reading.

This has probably been my most anticipated new release for a very long time. Like many people, I was totally awestruck by Hosseini's first novel The Kite Runner. His second; A Thousand Splendid Suns is up there in my Top Five Books, I was astounded by the story. Bearing this in mind, and despite my delight at acquiring a pre-publication copy of And The Mountains Echoed, I was a little nervous that I may be a little disappointed. Khaled Hosseini's fans do have to wait a long time between books, its been five years since A Thousand Splendid Suns. I can truthfully say that this is certainly worth that very very long wait. Once again, Khaled Hosseini has produced a story that will break hearts and leave his fans, new and old, gasping for more.

I loved both of his other books. I can't wait to get my hands on this one, too. May can't get here soon enough!

I cannot wait for the chance to read this! Ever since reading his first 2 books I have been waiting to hear about a new book from him. I just hope that it will be as great as the others, and am assuming it will be. It sounds like another great one that will be pretty emotional.
