In New York Times bestselling author Lisa Gardner's latest D.D. Warren thriller, the relentless Boston investigator must solve a coldly calculated murder--before it happens.

In four days, someone is going to kill me . . .

Detective D. D. Warren is hard to surprise. But a lone woman outside D.D.'s latest crime scene shocks her with a remarkable proposition: Charlene Rosalind Carter Grant believes she will be murdered in four days. And she wants Boston's top detective to handle the death investigation.

It will be up close and personal. No evidence of forced entry, no sign of struggle.

Charlie tells a chilling story: Each year at 8:00 p.m. on January 21st, a woman has died. The victims have been childhood best friends from a small town in New Hampshire; the motive remains unknown. Now only one friend, Charlie, remains to count down her final hours.

But as D.D. quickly learns, Charlie Grant doesn't plan on going down without a fight. By her own admission, the girl can outshoot, outfight, and outrun anyone in Boston. Which begs the question, is Charlie the next victim, or the perfect perpetrator? As D.D. tracks a vigilante gunman who is killing pedophiles in Boston, she must also delve into the murders of Charlie's friends, racing to find answers before the next gruesome January 21 anniversary. Is Charlie truly in danger, or is she hiding a secret that may turn out to be the biggest threat of all?

In four days, someone is going to kill me. But the son of a bitch has gotta catch me first.

Synopsis

ONE OF LIBRARY JOURNAL'S BEST THRILLERS OF THE YEAR

Charlene Grant believes she is going to die. For the past few years, her childhood friends have been murdered one by one. Same day. Same time. Now shes the last of her friends alive, and shes counting down the final four days of her life until January 21.   Charlene doesnt plan on going down without a fight. She has taken up boxing, shooting, and running. She also wants Bostons top homicide detective, D. D. Warren, to handle the investigation.   But as D.D. delves deeper into the case, she starts to question the womans story. Instinct tells her that Charlene may not be in any danger at all. Fast-paced suspenseful story, unfolded in small pieces that the reader can fit together. As more pieces are added, the puzzle has to be rearranged again and again. Just when it all seems clear -- something new! This is the kind of storytelling that appeals to folks who like to figure out "whodunnit" before being told. The narrator's speaking voice is pleasant, and she enunciates clearly. However, she read two major characters so similarly that I often couldn't tell them apart. When I finally caught on to who was speaking, I wished I could "turn back a page or two" to review what she had said and what it meant. Having heard one D. D. Warren short story, and then this novel, I'm definitely interested enough in Lisa Gardner's writing to seek out more in this series.

Lisa's latest scary, edge-of-your-seat outing may be her best so far! Always being a master at conceiving and researching stories that will stand your hair on end and make you wish you weren't reading them in the dark of night, her style and finesse in delivering them continues to mature and become more precise and focused. Every word draws a fine bead on character and drives the pace relentlessly, through twists and turns, to the final payoff -- whether you've guessed it or not. She puts you inside the thought processes of a brilliant and highly trained detective, and gives you the fun of working the clues yourself!

Lisa Gardner did fantastic job writing this novel. Starting out that the girl comes to the detective saying someone will kill me in 4 days and that she wants her to solve her murder. Very intriguing. When I started this book, I would have never predicted the ending. All I can think of is how this poor girl survived the life she was given. Trying to figure out who the killer was and the connection was very difficult, it took some thought to think of it before the author revealed. Great book!
