Harper C.: Five Book Friday: Uncanny Graphic Novels (0 comment)
We are in the thick of winter here in the Pacific Northwest, which means it's dark, damp, and chilly. Rather than escaping to stories with warmer, brighter climates, I personally want nothing more than to dive deep into gothic and uncanny fiction as the wind rattles my windows at night...

Synopsis

In Becca Fitzpatrick's Hush, Hush sixteen-year old Nora finds forbidden love.

Synopsis

For Nora Grey, romance was not part of the plan. She's never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how much her best friend, Vee, pushes them at her. Not until Patch came along.

With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Nora is drawn to him against her better judgment.

But after a series of terrifying encounters, Nora's not sure who to trust. Patch seems to be everywhere she is, and to know more about her than her closest friends. She can't decide whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth that is way more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel.

For Nora is right in the middle of an ancient battle between the immortal and those that have fallen - and, when it comes to choosing sides, the wrong choice will cost her life.

Synopsis

Partnered in biology with new student Patch, 16-year-old Nora Gray starts seeing things she cannot explain. At first she's both drawn and repelled by her lab partner, but when she sees V-shaped scars on his back, Nora learns Patch is fighting an ancient battle between the fallen and the immortal.

Synopsis

A dark and tender post-apocalyptic love story set in the aftermath of a bloody war

In a city where humans and Darklings are now separated by a high wall and tensions between the two races still simmer after a terrible war, sixteen-year-olds Ash Fisher, a half-blood Darkling, and Natalie Buchanan, a human and the daughter of the Emissary, meet and do the unthinkable--they fall in love. Bonded by a mysterious connection that causes Ash's long-dormant heart to beat, Ash and Natalie first deny and then struggle to fight their forbidden feelings for each other, knowing if they're caught, they'll be executed--but their feelings are too strong.

When Ash and Natalie then find themselves at the center of a deadly conspiracy that threatens to pull the humans and Darklings back into war, they must make hard choices that could result in both their deaths.

Synopsis

Weeks after his crucifixion and rebirth as Phoenix, Ash Fisher believes his troubles are far behind him. He and Natalie are engaged and life seems good. But his happiness is short-lived when he receives a threatening visit from Purian Rose, who gives Ash an ultimatum: vote in favor of Rose’s Law permanently relegating Darklings to the wrong side of the wall or Natalie will be killed. The decision seems obvious to Ash; he must save Natalie. But when Ash learns about The Tenth, a new and deadly concentration camp where the Darklings would be sent, the choice doesn’t seem so simple. Unable to ignore his conscience, Ash votes against Rose’s Law, signing Natalie’s death warrant and putting a troubled nation back into the throes of bloody battle.

Synopsis

Life turned upside down for Maddy Montgomery when she found out she was half-Angel and was catapulted into the scene of flashbulbs, paparazzi, and the fervent adulation that comes with being in the celebrity Angel world. She's trying to juggle her ordinary life—high school, family, friends—with the intense demands of being in the public eye as heartthrob Angel Jackson Godspeed's girlfriend.

And now Maddy must face the most difficult choice of her life. She's been offered the chance to become a Guardian. This means entering into dangerous and high stakes training, with no guarantee that she can succeed. But more than that, it would mean leaving her mortal life behind—forever—and allying with the Angels at a time when their relationship with humans is heading for war. . . .

Synopsis

“When you fall in love, you will carve out your heart and throw it into the deepest ocean. You will be all in—blood and salt.”

These are the last words Ash Larkin hears before her mother returns to the spiritual commune she escaped long ago. But when Ash follows her to Quivira, Kansas, something sinister and ancient waits among the rustling cornstalks of this village lost to time.

Ash is plagued by memories of her ancestor, Katia, which harken back to the towns history of unrequited love and murder, alchemy and immortality. Charming traditions soon give way to a string of gruesome deaths, and Ash feels drawn to Dane, a forbidden boy with secrets of his own.

As the community prepares for a ceremony five hundred years in the making, Ash must fight not only to save her mother, but herself—and discover the truth about Quivira before its too late. Before shes all in—blood and salt.

Contemporary, Paranormal Coldwater, Maine Nora is forced to be a lab partner to Patch. Nora would rather fall to her death rather than put up with his teasing and elusive answers to her questions. His handsome face and hypnotizing eyes don’t help either. It seems that Patch’s only reason to be on earth is to driver her crazy. Now Nora’s defenses are starting to break down as her curiosity gets more intense regarding Patch. It seems that every time she turns around Patch is there and seems to know exactly what she is thinking. He also somehow manages to both attract and repulse her and she doesn’t know why. And then there are the V-shaped scars on his back that has her wondering just what they could possibly be. The stronger their connection the more fragile Nora’s life becomes. Nora has a decision to make: Is Patch the one that is going to hurt her or keep her safe. Has she managed to fall for a fallen? This is a series that is starting out very strong and is sure to pull readers into it. The characters are well written and very interesting. The story has a great mystery in it that keeps the reader guessing just who is who and what is going to happen next. The story takes some great turns so the reader doesn’t see what is coming next at any given point. It will also have the reader wanting to read the next book in this series. It proves to be a fast read as the reader won’t want to put it down for any reason. This is one series to definitely check out.

If you love fallen angels or just angels, this book is for you. Nora has no clue the Patch is her guardian angel, but he does come in handy. This book shows us trust and love can come from the oddest places and people. This book as some slow parts and part that make you want to scream, but it's a brilliant story that leaves you guessing. The emotions in this book are brought out so well, you could almost feel them yourselves. Now, just don't go falling for a guy with wings. He may already have someone in his life.

He watches and waits. He knows and follows. He is your guardian. There is a new guy at school. He is handsome but dark and mysterious. He is interested in you. But, here is the catch, he knows everything about you. He knows more than your closest friends. This is the relationship of Nora and Patch. Patch is the new kid at Nora's school. He is everywhere Nora is and she is scared. He watches her like he is her guardian angel. I really liked this book. It was very suspenseful and was a definite page turner. I loved the mystery and the chills I got while reading, Hush Hush. This book is intended for young adults. But anyone who wants to read about fallen angels or mythical people should definitely read, Hush Hush.

I picked this book up at the library because the cover looked interesting. I was disappointed. It was a 5 star cover on a one star book to sell the book. The characters lacked depth, emotion and development. I read this book in a day, not because I liked it, because I wanted to get it over with. I am still wondering what the book is REALLY about. There was no symbolism and there was no mystery or suspense. To me it was way to one-dimensional. The characters felt like windows, too see through and as fake as a nose job. I do love the idea of fallen angels, but for me this was a dud. Fallen, by Lauren Kate is a much better fallen angel book. I don't condemn anyone who likes the book or disagrees with my opinion. But I suggest you save your money and skip this book. Needless to say I was glad I picked it up from the library and didn't buy it, I'd be asking for a refund.

If you enjoyed Twilight, you'll enjoy this dark, fallen angel romance about Nora, a typical teenage girl, and Patch, her bad boy biology partner with a mysterious demeanor. Nora doesn't understand why it seems like someone wants to kill her, and her best friend is convinced that Patch is behind all the creepy things that seem to be happening. Nora isn't sure what to think until she starts falling for Patch, and has to decide if she thinks her safety is worth risking to figure out his secrets...

The blurb: Nora Grey is responsible and smart and not inclined to be too reckless. Her first mistake was falling for Patch. Patch has a past that could be called anything but harmless. The best thing he ever did was fall for Nora. After getting paired with Patch in biology, all Nora wants to do is stay away from him, but he always seems to be two steps ahead of her. She can feel his eyes on her even when he is nowhere around. She feels him nearby even when she is alone in her bedroom. And when her attraction can be denied no longer, she learns the secret about who Patch is and what led him to her. Despite all the questions she has about his past, in the end, there may be only one question they can ask each other: How far are you willing to fall? Review: I had read about Hush, Hush and was very excited to receive a review copy. I recently heard that the final version of the book has a different ending from the one that I reviewed. Hush, Hush reminded me of Twilight in part because the main characters and interaction are set in the local high school. Nora Grey's friends are edgier, more dangerous than the Twilight set. Nora Grey reminds me of Bella though: she shares the same observant tone but is similarly prone to get into dangerous situations. When reading Nora Grey's thoughts, I have the same desire to yell - "Watch out!" and to shake her into action that I had when I read the Twilight books. What I enjoyed most in Hush, Hush was the relationship between Nora Grey and Patch. Patch's protectiveness and his kindness towards Nora make the book worth reading and rereading. If you enjoy stories of young love battling crazy odds with a strong dose of fantasy, you will probably enjoy Hush, Hush.
