Harper C.: Five Book Friday: Uncanny Graphic Novels (0 comment)
We are in the thick of winter here in the Pacific Northwest, which means it's dark, damp, and chilly. Rather than escaping to stories with warmer, brighter climates, I personally want nothing more than to dive deep into gothic and uncanny fiction as the wind rattles my windows at night...

Publisher Comments

Everyone has something, someone, somewhere else that they’d rather be. For four high-school seniors, their goals of perfection are just as different as the paths they take to get there.

Cara's parents' unrealistic expectations have already sent her twin brother Conner spiraling toward suicide. For her, perfect means rejecting their ideals to take a chance on a new kind of love. Kendra covets the perfect face and body — no matter what surgeries and drugs she needs to get there. To score his perfect home run — on the field and off — Sean will sacrifice more than he can ever win back. And Andre realizes that to follow his heart and achieve his perfect performance, he'll be living a life his ancestors would never have understood.

Everyone wants to be perfect, but when perfection loses its meaning, how far will you go? What would you give up to be perfect?

A riveting and startling companion to the bestselling Impulse, Ellen Hopkins's Perfect exposes the harsh truths about what it takes to grow up and grow into our own skins, our own selves.

"Hopkins addresses teensand#8217; struggle with unrealistic expectations in gut-wrenching free verse."andlt;BRandgt; --andlt;iandgt;Booklistandlt;/iandgt;, August 2011

Review

"At its nucleus, four teenagers are grappling with insecurities that become exacerbated when loved ones turn up the heat. . . . The unrestricted access Hopkins employs is formidable: parents, siblings, love interests, and outliers all thrust frank judgment on the characters. It is how Cara, Sean, Kendra, and Andre react that encourages readersand#8217; emotional attachments. Her writing conveys teenage quandaries with all of the intended consequences, as the verse style only serves to shock as the events unfold."andlt;BRandgt; --andlt;Iandgt;VOYAandlt;/Iandgt;, October 2011

Absolutely amazing. The way that Hopkins explains what is going on through the characters' minds leaves me breathless--I couldn't put it down. Reading their struggles to find perfection was so addicting, I finished the book within a day. It is very interesting to watch the character's minds whir, and you can view the emotions they feel. Cara's point of view on her brother--who is picked apart in Impulse--was very mesmerizing and had me reconsider how I had previously perceived her. This book was incredible, and it inspired me to fall in love with Hopkins' writing all over again.

Skeleton Key , February 29, 2012 (view all comments by Skeleton Key)
Perfect is about the daily struggle of most teenagers in high school. Four teens, all soon to go to college, strive to be perfect. But what they don't realize is that being Perfect comes with a price. It helped me realize perfect isn't what everyone wants you to be. It's what you are.
