Dizz Tate: Books That Made Me Want to Write: Dizz Tate’s Bookshelf for Brutes (0 comment)
When I was writing my book, Brutes, there came a point where I wanted to be thinking about it even when I was so tired of it I couldn’t bear to look at it anymore. I was also terrified of leaving it alone, like the book would forget me if I stopped reminding it I was there...

What if women could become pregnant into their 70s? What if a woman's fertility could be increased exponentially? What if the ever-encroaching biological clock disappeared? Ann Patchett takes us deep into the Amazon in search of answers to these questions in her latest novel.

The amazingly long fertility window in the female members of the Lakashi Amazonian tribe is the subject of study for a group of doctors. When head researcher Dr. Swenson, after a decade of study, refuses to come home, share her work, or even report back to her bosses, Dr. Eckman, is sent in after her. When Dr. Eckman turns up dead, Dr. Singh is sent in to bring back his body, but also to shake loose Dr. Swenson's research results. What follows is a terrific story of survival, curiosity, culture shock and acclimation, as Dr. Singh makes her way through the jungle and finally tracks down Dr. Swenson. A story thread involving a deaf-mute child, who has somehow defected from a rival tribe, is sweet and eventually astonishing.

Patchett has laser-like insight into her characters; they never feel anything less than real. With anacondas, a hailstorm of arrows, unsanitary surgery, big-business-pharmaceutical greed, ethnocentric interference, and a great story buoyed by wonderful characters, this is a must-read. Publisher Comments

In a narrative replete with poison arrows, devouring snakes, scientific miracles, and spiritual transformations, State of Wonder presents a world of stunning surprise and danger, rich in emotional resonance and moral complexity.

As Dr. Marina Singh embarks upon an uncertain odyssey into the insect-infested Amazon, she will be forced to surrender herself to the lush but forbidding world that awaits within the jungle. Charged with finding her former mentor Dr. Annick Swenson, a researcher who has disappeared while working on a valuable new drug, she will have to confront her own memories of tragedy and sacrifice as she journeys into the unforgiving heart of darkness. Stirring and luminous, State of Wonder is a world unto itself, where unlikely beauty stands beside unimaginable loss beneath the rain forest's jeweled canopy.

Reading this will really put you in a State of Wonder. Bel Canto, by this author, was so good that I thought this one might be a letdown. But, definitely not so. She creates very complete characters and immerses the reader in the South American jungle setting. I am looking forward to her next book.

An example of brilliant prose, expressing a very real and transparent look at human emotions, set in a riveting, suspenseful field

I'm a sucker for any book that raises ethical questions about medicine and medical practice, and this book does that to a T! As always, Patchett's characters are highly individual, drawn with exquisite detail. They became so real to me that when the book ended I could only keep turning blank pages, longing to know what happens to them next. I would even read the telephone book if Ann Patchett wrote it, and this book met every one of my expectations. Terrific!

With this novel, Ann Patchett surpasses her previous masterpiece, "Bel Canto." Where "Bel Canto" focuses to a large degree on the impact of art on society, "State of Wonder" explores the ethical choices we face on a global scale in the name of medical research and science. Patchett has crafted a beautifully constructed, entertaining, and suspenseful novel that keeps the reader engaged until the very last page. I highly recommend this book!

Great combination of medical topics, research, unique characters, bizarre circumstances, and the Amazon jungle. Best 1st chapter I've ever read.

I’ve always loved Ann Patchett’s novels and had heard great things about this one. I was expecting to be completely wowed by this book, especially since one review on the cover stated “this is her masterpiece”, and the back cover tells us it’s “a best book of the year”. I didn’t dislike it, I just wasn’t feeling the need to tell anyone “you have to read this book” after I finished. If I loved it and wanted to recommend it, I would definitely be telling others about it. Not this one though. I thought the concept for the book was good and it could have been a very rich and interesting story. None of the characters were likable and were all somewhat flat. I felt no emotional connection with the main character, Marina Singh, at all. The relationship she had with her boss did not seem the least bit believable or genuine. I did think her descriptions of the Amazon painted a wonderful and vivid sensory image of life in the jungle, You could almost hear the buzzing and ravenous mosquitoes, feel the oppressive heat, and the power of the storms. My skin was almost crawling reading about some of the bugs. I REALLY hate bugs! I learned that I enjoyed reading about the Amazon, but after reading this book I have absolutely no desire to ever go there!

I had high expectations for this book based on how much I loved Ann Patchett's "Bel Canto," and I'm pleased to say they were more than satisfied. In fact, I think Patchett did an even better job here. The conclusion of this book feels less contrived and less forced than the end of "Bel Canto." I don't want to say too much about the story for fear of giving things away, but I enjoyed every page. The novel builds suspense and remains compelling even as the main character is growing and changing and going through her own internal struggles. The book made me think about the ways one single day or mistake can change the path of your life and also how we place a value on the life we're leading vs. the lives others have built for themselves.

Everything about this book is delicious: the writing and the plot. I wanted to finish the book because the story is so great, but I slowed to enjoy each sentence as a separate work of art. So many prizes under one cover!

This book took me where I would never go, and dealt with subject matter close to my heart, as I have been involved in women's healthcare for almost 30 years. Great read. Fully fleshed out characters and a satisfying conclusion.

MY favorite Anne Patchett book so far. Nearly 50 years ago, I went with a couple who exported items that they collected from tribes along the Amazon from Iquitos, Peru to a jungle village in a small boat. When I read State of Wonder, I felt I had returned to the same places. What may seem improbable, simply magical realism, to one who has not seen the area, seems very probable to one who has. A book that will stay on my shelves and be re-read and savored. Anne Patchett created a sensory feast. The characters, the story, the environment....all of a piece.
