Harper C.: Five Book Friday: Uncanny Graphic Novels (0 comment)
We are in the thick of winter here in the Pacific Northwest, which means it's dark, damp, and chilly. Rather than escaping to stories with warmer, brighter climates, I personally want nothing more than to dive deep into gothic and uncanny fiction as the wind rattles my windows at night...

Staff Pick

The Shining is a wonderful mash-up of stories: haunted house (the hotel is a really big house for the Torrance family), extra-sensory perception, family dynamics in an extreme isolation experience, full-on madness. This book has become part of our popular culture. It's still as scary as they come. Recommended By Frank W., Powells.com

Publisher Comments

Jack Torrance’s new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he’ll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote... and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

Review

“Scary!...Serves up horrors at a brisk, unflagging pace.” The New York Times

Review

“This chilling novel will haunt you, and make your blood run cold and your heart race with fear.” Nashville Banner

Synopsis

Before Doctor Sleep, there was The Shining, a classic of modern American horror from the undisputed master, Stephen King.

Jack Torrance's new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he'll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote . . . and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

One of my favorite Stephen King books. I never looked at hotels, especially old hotels, the same way again.

Best horror book ever ! *Spoiler alert* The Shining by Stephen King This novel set the bar high to all horror/thriller novels !! It's not just scary in form of sequence of horror event , it takes it to the psychological scary level taking in mind the past and deep subconscious mind of the characters . Perfectly paced novel , not too fast nor slow leaving u excited to the next chapter . King left me confused about my feelings toward the characters ! Which I found fascinating ! I loved Jack despite his numerous flaws and at the end I hated him even tho he was controlled by the overlook hotel , and it was the opposite about Wendy! the weird part that I start liking her suddenly while I found her annoying for most of the novel ! :/ This novel is amazing not just as a horror novel , it's detailed beautifully and well written making u enjoy every second . It's not just a "book to read" it was a total experience that I wanna read again already . Rate : 7 out of 5 ! King killed it ! '❤️❤️ He is the king for real '"

I was surprised to see this book listed last as one of the scariest books vs. film versions, so I decided to check out some comments and found none. So ... it's been years since I read this book, but it has stayed with me all this time. This is one of the scariest books I have ever read, period. I am thankful that I read the book when it came out, therefore before the film, because the film was HORRIBLE!!! I am sorry, all you "Shining" and Jack Nicholson fans, but it was not representative of the brilliance that this story presents. The unraveling and possession of Danny's father happens slowly, and very poignantly. His mother is strong and tries to protect him, unlike the shrillness of Shelley Duvall's character. The relationship between Danny and the cook is brief but important. And the Overlook and all its' rooms and corners and ... most of all ... its' topiary animals will keep you up at night unable to sleep for the sheer terror they provide. Do yourself a big favor if you loved the film: read the book. You will find a much more nuanced and truly frightening story in its' pages.
