Jinwoo Chong: Clock In: Jinwoo Chong’s Playlist for 'Flux' (0 comment)
I had my first inklings of the novel that eventually became Flux about a year after I was laid off from my first job after college, the result of a corporate takeover of my company that eliminated my entire department. While a tough hurdle to overcome at twenty-one years old, I learned a lot about self-sufficiency....

Publisher Comments

In this bestselling and “charming debut” (People) from one of Sweden’s most successful authors, a grumpy yet loveable man finds his solitary world turned on its head when a boisterous young family moves in next door.

Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him “the bitter neighbor from hell.” But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn’t walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time?

Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents’ association to their very foundations.

A feel-good story in the spirit of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand, Fredrik Backman’s novel about the angry old man next door is a thoughtful exploration of the profound impact one life has on countless others. “If there was an award for ‘Most Charming Book of the Year,’ this first novel by a Swedish blogger-turned-overnight-sensation would win hands down” (Booklist, starred review).

Review

“A charming debut…You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll feel new sympathy for the curmudgeons in your life. You’ll also want to move to Scandinavia, where everything’s cuter.” People

Review

"An inspiring affirmation of love for life and acceptance of people for their essence and individual quirks.” BookBrowse.com

Review

"The lyrical language is the confetti thrown liberally throughout this celebration-of-life story, adding sparkle and color to an already spectacular party. Backman's characters feel so authentic that readers will likely find analogues living in their own neighborhoods." Shelf Awareness (Starred Review)

Review

"Readers seeking feel-good tales with a message will rave about the rantings of this solitary old man with a singular outlook. “This charming debut novel by Backman should find a ready audience with English-language readers…hysterically funny…wry descriptions, excellent pacing…In the contest of Most Winning Combination, it would be hard to beat grumpy Ove and his hidden, generous heart.”Kirkus Reviews

I love Fredrick Backman's books and this one is no exception. He writes characters so well that you really feel like you know them and you fall in love with them, flaws and all. A Man Called Ove is so beautifully sad and really made me think about the lives that everyone leads. For me, it was a reminder to be kind, because you never know what another person may be going through and the positive (or negative) effect that your actions oils have in their life. You'll probably shed a few tears reading this one, but it's worth it.

The main character, Ove, bothered me while I read the first half of this book. I thought 'why is he so negative and moody?' But by the end of the book I realized I had 'misread' him and he actually has a huge heart. He cares deeply for others, which is why he is so critical of rules. The more he is called on for help, the more he has to alter his sacred routine, which is hard for him but he ultimately puts others first. This was a great read about the human heart and how it can be disguised in many different forms.

This was the second book in our new book club's picks, and I have to say that is the only reason I read it. I've seen it on shelves and in a friend's home, but it isn't the reading challenge that I prefer. Some reviews call it "hilarious," but I found it more like "amusing." We all know someone like Ove, or at least I do, and that makes him a believable character. I think the only thing that made this book different from other books about grumpy old widowers is the string of misfortunes that made Ove a curmudgeon. It's "heartwarming" and "heartbreaking," and if you like stories that you can pick up and put down while you're doing something else, this is that book. I know I'm in the minority on this one, but that's why we often look at reviews before we choose our next read. PS--Amazon Prime has the subtitled film version that sticks very close to the book.

I love Ove. Perceived as a curmudgeon, but I saw him more as someone who was misunderstood. His life was so simple and so complex at the same time. Great wit, humor, sarcasm and really a great heart. A type-A personality, a rule follower, definitely saw that things should be a certain way and was going to do his darndest to hold himself and others to a level of excellence and principles. The book was worth all the hype.

If you had told me there was a new sub-genre of fiction called Books About Seemingly Crotchety But Actually Softhearted Old Swedish Men, I would not have necessarily expected to enjoy even one book that fit into it. Now I've thoroughly enjoyed *two*. "A Man Called Ove" doesn't have much in common, really, with "The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared," but something about the sensibilities and central characters definitely offers a bit of a connection. In this novel, minor irritations keep getting in the way of a grumpy widower's plans to kill himself. After a while, it's nearly impossible to resist empathizing with Ove.
