Synopsis

In an enthralling new historical novel from national bestselling author Kate Quinn, two women--a female spy recruited to the real-life Alice Network in France during World War I and an unconventional American socialite searching for her cousin in 1947--are brought together in a mesmerizing story of courage and redemption.

1947. In the chaotic aftermath of World War II, American college girl Charlie St. Clair is pregnant, unmarried, and on the verge of being thrown out of her very proper family. She's also nursing a desperate hope that her beloved cousin Rose, who disappeared in Nazi-occupied France during the war, might still be alive. So when Charlie's parents banish her to Europe to have her "little problem" taken care of, Charlie breaks free and heads to London, determined to find out what happened to the cousin she loves like a sister.

1915. A year into the Great War, Eve Gardiner burns to join the fight against the Germans and unexpectedly gets her chance when she's recruited to work as a spy. Sent into enemy-occupied France, she's trained by the mesmerizing Lili, the "Queen of Spies," who manages a vast network of secret agents right under the enemy's nose.

Thirty years later, haunted by the betrayal that ultimately tore apart the Alice Network, Eve spends her days drunk and secluded in her crumbling London house. Until a young American barges in uttering a name Eve hasn't heard in decades, and launches them both on a mission to find the truth...no matter where it leads.

"Both funny and heartbreaking, this epic journey of two courageous women is an unforgettable tale of little-known wartime glory and sacrifice. Quinn knocks it out of the park with this spectacular book "--Stephanie Dray, New York Times bestselling author of America's First Daughter

n this book, Kate Quinn establishes herself as the queen of historical fiction. The story revolves round Eve, a first World War spy who was part of a women's spying network, called the Alice network. It links her to Charlie an unwed American pregnant woman who arrives at her doorstep in search of her cousin. Thrown in for good measure is Finn a handsome Scottish ma and this ends up in a lot of romance. The book was great except that I wish I hadn't been told about Eve's gnarled knuckles right in the beginning.. This would have added to the suspense. Regardless it was a great read with a wonderful ending.

Set, like many other modern novels, in two time periods, The Alice Network brings to life the countryside and towns of France during both during the First World War and just after the Second. It’s quite a feat, and the author pulls it off well, reminding me of the beautiful country and language, and pulling me deep into the thought patterns of people not so long ago. The WWII protagonist tells her story in her own words. American, relatively rich, and now an only child, she has broken the moral rules of her society, but isn’t sure what moral rules she wants to follow for herself. Meanwhile she meets the WWI protagonist, who broke all the rules, then was herself broken. Before reading I wondered how this meetings of times and people would be engineered, but it feels natural in the story. Of course they meet. Of course they strike sparks off each other. And of course they end up on a road trip to find the people they’ve lost. Three people (and one car, almost a character in itself) end up taking this road trip, and each (including the car) will, perhaps, find themselves. Nothing works quite as planned, but even the moments that feel almost false prove surprisingly true. A coming of age novel as well as romance, an intriguing (and detailed—by turns delightful, horrifying and scary) spy story as well as a historical novel, and a gripping tale that invites the reader to examine the mores of past and present and question, just how do we treat or use people, the Alice Network is highly recommended Disclosure: A friend lent me the book, correctly guessing I would love it!

"The Alice Network" features two strong women, each trying to find her place in the world during and immediately after one of the world wars. In chapters that alternate between eras, Kate Quinn introduces us to a network of female spies operating in German-occupied France during WWI and to a disillusioned college student searching for her missing cousin in France in 1947. This work of historical fiction moves along at a roaring pace, with lots of cussing and defiance of societal norms. There's romance, intrigue and a truly evil villain, too. "The Alice Network" has such a cinematic feel that I can only assume there will soon be a movie.

Book Fairy , November 12, 2017 (view all comments by Book Fairy)
I don't have adequate words to describe how much I loved The Alice Network. Every time I read a book by Kate Quinn I am in awe of her talent, her exquisite writing, and the fascinating characters she creates. She has an amazing ability to weave real events and people with fictional characters to create the most unforgettable stories. I was so engrossed in the book, I couldn't put it down. I was racing through the pages to discover if Eve and Charlie found the truth they were searching for and had the closure they needed. On the other hand I didn't want this book to end because I didn't want to say goodbye to Charlie, Eve and, of course, Finn. I can't get enough of this trio and want more books with them! The Alice Network is without a doubt one of the best books I've read this year and it is going straight on my "favorites" shelf. I cannot recommend this book enough. Run, don't walk to a bookstore to get this gem!

Unabridged Chick , June 27, 2017 (view all comments by Unabridged Chick)
Dual storylines about the extents we go for loyalty and/or love; the deep waters of friendship between women; espionage in World War I and the secrets of life post-World War II. Charlie is a pregnant college student off to get an abortion when she decides to ditch her mother and search for her missing French cousin. She enlists the bitter, hard-drinking, pistol-wielding Eve, a former spy who can't hide her mangled hands, the only evidence of her past work, to help her with her search. This novel just hits it all: plot, characters, place, era, details, drama, villains, heroines, and wonderfully compelling storytelling -- everything was there that I wanted, unfolding in that delicious way that makes me just want to skip meals and read. Quinn manages to offer all the details one wants in a historical novel without it feeling clunky or awkward; she sketches up people in a manner that makes them clear, vibrant, and real. There isn't a wasted word, an overdrawn or rushed moment, or sloppily sketched caricature to be found. This is another top ten read for me this year and it left me with quite a book hangover -- so get it and prepare yourself to do nothing until you're done.
