Kelsey Ford: Twelve Days of Horror (0 comment)
While putting this post together, I realized that the original song this is based on, “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” needs very little amending to become horrific: why is someone gifting their lover so many different kinds of birds? That can’t be safe? But we love notching the horror up whenever we can, so in our version of the song...

A beautifully compelling coming-of-age tale that offers an important glimpse into the immigrant experience. Tahir elegantly explores the complicated nuances of trauma with incredibly honest writing and such richly drawn characters, I felt I knew them personally after finishing.  Recommended By Tawney E., Powells.com

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Sabaa Tahir comes a brilliant, unforgettable, and heart-wrenching contemporary YA novel about family and forgiveness, love and loss, in a sweeping story that crosses generations and continents.

Lahore, Pakistan. Then.
Misbah is a dreamer and storyteller, newly married to Toufiq in an arranged match. After their young life is shaken by tragedy, they come to the United States and open the Clouds’ Rest Inn Motel, hoping for a new start.

Juniper, California. Now.
Salahudin and Noor are more than best friends; they are family. Growing up as outcasts in the small desert town of Juniper, California, they understand each other the way no one else does. Until The Fight, which destroys their bond with the swift fury of a star exploding.

Now, Sal scrambles to run the family motel as his mother Misbah’s health fails and his grieving father loses himself to alcoholism. Noor, meanwhile, walks a harrowing tightrope: working at her wrathful uncle’s liquor store while hiding the fact that she’s applying to college so she can escape him — and Juniper — forever.

When Sal’s attempts to save the motel spiral out of control, he and Noor must ask themselves what friendship is worth — and what it takes to defeat the monsters in their pasts and the ones in their midst.

From one of today’s most cherished and bestselling young adult authors comes a breathtaking novel of young love, old regrets, and forgiveness — one that’s both tragic and poignant in its tender ferocity.

Destroyed me in the best way possible After I finished reading I was blown away and needed some time to catch up with the waves of emotion that had destroyed me. At first I was actually not sure if I'd be able to read this book because of the dark themes that were mentioned beforehand. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to handle it to be honest, so much is/was happening, that I needed a light hearted read before diving deep into my feels with this book. And then reading another light hearted book after this book so I wouldn't be pulled into a depressive state. So this is a trigger-warning for those that aren't in the mood to read darker themed books. Though my disclaimer might go unheard of I thought to just put that out there. This book is an exceptional, dazzling, and heart-breaking book about family. And whay family's go through; of both tender and despondent of times in ways that are relatable to any family in the world. To say simply, I found this book quite sad and relatable. The cover did a good job of just being there. It really brings your attention to the storyline more.

This was a good story. It’s wonderfully written; you can tell Tahir crafted it carefully with her whole heart in it. It’s a story with a strong focus on Islam and grief. Music is big in this book too, though I was admittedly not interested in this aspect. Whenever a song was named I was either like, Yeah, heard that one before, or, Haven’t heard that one before. I also never felt particularly attached to the characters.

All My Rage is the story of two Pakistani American teenagers growing up in a small desert town California. Salahudin and Noor are outsiders and best friends facing incredibly adverse circumstances. The richly developed characters drew me in immediately and I felt that I was right alongside them. All My Rage also includes the story of Salahudin's parents, told in a dual timeline. This book is a beautiful, raw and haunting story of intergenerational and hidden trauma, faith, love, dreams, family, loss, grief, rage, the ugliness of racism, and the persistence of hope. It will leave you gutted, heartbroken and reeling. There are multiple triggers, about which Sabaa Tahir warns the reader. This book is characterized as Young Adult; however, adult readers will find it to be insightful, riveting and thought provoking. All My Rage is clearly one of the best and unforgettable books of 2022. #BookishFirst

ALL MY RAGE is one of those books you finish reading and can't stop thinking about! I am a huge fan of Sabaa Tahir's writing and was super excited to read this book and see how she would write a book that wasn't a fantasy. And let me just say, this book is absolutely incredible! From the start of the novel, I was pulled right into these characters’ lives and enjoyed how each of the three perspectives gave us a part of the overall story. It came as no surprise then, how emotional this book made me! Tahir does such an amazing job of getting us to connect to each character in the book and making us feel what they are feeling. I appreciated how nuanced the characters and their relationships with one another were. I appreciated how beautiful the writing was, and how Tahir didn't shy away from making us as readers feel those big emotions. As a high school teacher and librarian, I am ecstatic that this book will be added to our school collection so that our students can have the opportunity to read this novel. I am certain they will love it as much as I have!

Every now and then, a contemporary book comes along that proceeds to fall in love with you, rip your heart out, and place a Bandaid over the wound. All My Rage was that book. I didn’t know a lot about the story when I went into it blind, and to be honest, a lot of content was triggering. I think that’s what makes it so important. This book was raw, real, painful, and a harsh look at the realities of many POC in the United States, specifically our brothers and sisters from the Middle East. The prose in this book was beautiful, each character was rich and full. Even the characters I HATED were so fully written that I couldn’t look away. The story itself was gut wrenching but so good. I found myself holding on to this tiny kernel of hope throughout the story’s progression, even when all hope seemed lost. I think that may have been the entire point. Life is pain, struggle. In this, we endure. In this, we are not alone.

Even with the trigger warnings in the front of the book (they’re well done, look because this book doesn’t pull punches) I wasn’t ready for quite how hard this book kicked me in the feelings. I’m not saying I didn’t like it, I did very much and think this is a book more people should read. But it covers a lot and most of it is dark. The story is told in three parts the first is about Misbah and takes place in the past starting in Pakistan. The second is her son Salahudin or Sal. The third is Sal’s best friend Noor. All three of them are going through difficult times and faced with hard choices. Misbah is sick with kidney issues with no insurance or money for treatments. Sal is trying to save the Inn his mother dreamed of running while his father has dived back into a bottle. Noor is desperate to make something more of her life than working in her uncle’s liquor store and determined to make it into college. This story weaves across time and lives and was just beautiful, even if it made me cry more than a little.
