Harper C.: Five Book Friday: Uncanny Graphic Novels (0 comment)
We are in the thick of winter here in the Pacific Northwest, which means it's dark, damp, and chilly. Rather than escaping to stories with warmer, brighter climates, I personally want nothing more than to dive deep into gothic and uncanny fiction as the wind rattles my windows at night...

Staff Top Fives 2015

Our favorite books of the year.

Staff Pick

This isn't a young adult novel about something as black and white as cancer. All the Bright Places lives in a world of gray. Being mentally unwell — whether it's depression, bipolar disorder, or grief — is difficult for other people to really understand, and it's the difficulty Violet and Finch face each day. Love won't solve anything; it isn't that simple. But to have experienced it, at least, is nice. A fantastic new YA voice who doesn't make you feel something — you just do. Publisher Comments

The Fault in Our Stars meets Eleanor and Park in this exhilarating and heart-wrenching love story about a girl who learns to live from a boy who intends to die.

Soon to be a major motion picture starring Elle Fanning!

Theodore Finch is fascinated by death, and he constantly thinks of ways he might kill himself. But each time, something good, no matter how small, stops him.

Violet Markey lives for the future, counting the days until graduation, when she can escape her Indiana town and her aching grief in the wake of her sister’s recent death.

When Finch and Violet meet on the ledge of the bell tower at school, it’s unclear who saves whom. And when they pair up on a project to discover the “natural wonders” of their state, both Finch and Violet make more important discoveries: It’s only with Violet that Finch can be himself — a weird, funny, live-out-loud guy who’s not such a freak after all. And it’s only with Finch that Violet can forget to count away the days and start living them. But as Violet’s world grows, Finch’s begins to shrink.

This is an intense, gripping novel perfect for fans of Jay Asher, Rainbow Rowell, John Green, Gayle Forman, and Jenny Downham from a talented new voice in YA, Jennifer Niven.

Review

"In her YA debut, adult author Niven creates a romance so fresh and funny....The journey to, through, and past tragedy is romantic and heartbreaking, as characters and readers confront darkness, joy, and the possibilities — and limits — of love in the face of mental illness.” Publishers Weekly, starred review

Review

“The writing in this heartrending novel is fluid, despite the difficult topics.…Finch in particular will linger in readers’ minds long after the last page is turned.” School Library Journal, starred review

"At the heart--a big one--of "All the Bright Places" lies a charming love story about this unlikely and endearing pair of broken teenagers."
-- New York Times Book Review

"...this heartbreaking love story about two funny, fragile, and wildly damaged high school kids named Violet and Finch is worth reading. Niven is a skillful storyteller who never patronizes her characters--or her audience."
-- Entertainment Weekly

This book is heart breakingly wonderful. It's a story that has such cute and developed characters and an honest portrayal of mental illness, grief, and the struggles of growing up. While there are parts of the story that are certainly quirky team romance(just a couple small town kids going on adventures to see their state and of course this boy knows exactly how much he needs to push this girl to help her) but both characters are lovable and stunning in their own way. Violet is a well written teenage girl that finds her own way through tragedy. The story is essentially about life and growth and getting through the day to day and everything from the way each character labels their days (Finch counting forward from his low point and Violet counting down to her high point)gave the book an unexpected depth that shows the parallels between them.

McGuffy Ann Morris , January 16, 2015 (view all comments by McGuffy Ann Morris)
This is an emotionally charged novel about two mismatched young people. Violet is a popular cheerleader; manic Finch is considered the school “freak”. It seems they should have nothing in common, but they do. Violet is trying desperately to cope with the sudden loss of her sister. A car accident took the life of her sister, leaving Violet the sole survivor of the crash. She is left with devastating guilt, causing her to rethink life. Finch leads a manic way of life giving him the label, “The Freak”. He is always changing his persona and his outlook. He is also constantly plagued by thoughts of depression and suicide. One day the two teens meet through dangerous and unusual circumstances. Together, they set off on a life altering journey. Neither one of them will ever be the same. Jennifer Niven has written an extraordinary novel that goes far beyond youthful angst. This brave, heartrending story delves into the deep recesses of the troubled teenaged psyche. Watch for the movie based on this incredible book.
