Synopsis
Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study and Use of the Psalms, Vol. 1
To those who read the psalms in their original language I must explain that I have throughout, even when referring to the Hebrew text, numbered the verses as in the English Biblical version. This was the only simple and consistent course to take. The constant use of a double set of figures would have been cum brous; the alternate resort to the English and Hebrew systems of numbering would have been a source of endless perplexity; and if either the one or the other were to be exclusively adopted, there could be no question to which of the two, in a work mainly ln tended for English readers, the preference must be given.
