The population of the colonies multiplied, with a rapidity that astonished Europe. Though during the first quarter century of the settlement they were call ed upon to suffer all the ills that flesh is heir to, from cold, and hunger, and disease, and savage vio lence, they rose superior to them all, and soon became a powerful eople, respectable both for numbers and character.
