About the Author

Jan Karon, born Janice Meredith Wilson in the foothills of North Carolina, was named after the title of a popular novel, Janice Meredith.

Jan wrote her first novel at the age of ten. "The manuscript was written on Blue Horse notebook paper, and was, for good reason, kept hidden from my sister. When she found it, she discovered the one curse word I had, with pounding heart, included in someone's speech. For Pete's sake, hadn't Rhett Butler used that very same word and gotten away with it? After my grandmother's exceedingly focused reproof, I've written books without cussin' ever since."

Several years ago, Karon left a successful career in advertising to move to the mountain village of Blowing Rock, North Carolina, and write books. "I stepped out on faith to follow my lifelong dream of being an author," she says. "I made real sacrifices and took big risks. But living, it seems to me, is largely about risk."

Enthusiastic booksellers across the country have introduced readers of all ages to Karon's heartwarming books. At Home in Mitford, Karon's first book in the Mitford series, was nominated for an ABBY by the American Booksellers Association in 1996 and again in 1997. Bookstore owner, Shirley Sprinkle, says, "The Mitford Books have been our all-time fiction bestsellers since we went in business twenty-five years ago. We've sold 10,000 of Jan's books and don't see any end to the Mitford phenomenon."

As the title suggests, I instantly felt at home in Mitford and was quite content to stay a spell. Delightful characters. Good humor. A dog that likes poetry and responds positively to scripture. Animated descriptions and lively conversations. The town and its residents spring to life in the details. As a reader, I became invested in the lives of the characters, and the town of Mitford is definitely one I'd like to revisit. Honestly, I was a bit surprised to enjoy the read as much as I did. I half expected to be bored by such a seemingly tranquil town and the mild-mannered Father Tim, but I never was. Rich storytelling made all the difference. I found myself quite caught up and felt as though I'd just enjoyed a home-cooked meal with all the fixings when I finished the book. I can see now why the series has enjoyed such popularity for so many years.

I read the Mitford series when I was going through my divorce. It helped me tremendously. The stories take you to a happy and peaceful place. I'm not Christian, but there are lots of "lessons" to be learned.

I have read this series a few times and find all the books enjoyable, though sometimes a bit ponderous. I am not Christian, but I often read Christian fiction because I like "gentle" fiction. If you are like me, I would read Miss Read (start with Village School or Thrush Green) first, then go to Jan Karon, if you don't mind the occasional bit of preachiness.

A humorous detailed look at the life of a minister in a small southern town. See into the personal life and ministry of a man that must deal with God and people on a daily 24/7 basis. You will meet many colorful and varied characters, and come to love each one and loathe a few troublemakers. Although this series deals with many weighty topics, it is bathed in a delightful uplifting humor that is rarely found in Christian fiction. A very few slang terms are used in this series, and maybe one or two inappropriate words for true "Christian" fiction, but it is easily dealt with. I have the entire set and could hardly wait as each book came on the market. Sadly the Mitford series is complete, but hey, now you can get them as a set or even used. (Look on the bright side) I would say this is currently my favorite series. I drank in each book and reread them too. If you start with At Home in Mitford you will be hooked.
