Kelsey Ford: Celebrate Short Story Month: 7 Recommendations Based on 7 Collections We Love (0 comment)
I love short story collections because of how much they manage to do with so little. They can dilate, expand, shatter, constellate. Within any given collection, you can move from the moon to a diner after midnight to that liminal minute right when you wake up but are still knee-deep in a dream..

Publisher Comments

An impressive debut, equal parts commercial appeal and literary prowess.

Princess Aurelia is next in line to rule the kingdom of Tyralt, but she would rather be one of the common folk, free to learn and roam and...not marry the next tyrannical prince that comes courting. Naturally, the king wants Aurelia to marry for political power. Aurelia wants to marry for love. And someone in the kingdom wants her...dead. Assigned to investigate and protect Aurelia is Robert, the son of the king's former royal spy and one of Aurelia's oldest friends. As Aurelia and Robert slowly uncover clues as to who is threatening her, their friendship turns to romance. With everything possible on the line — her life, her kingdom, her heart — Aurelia is forced to take matters into her own hands, no matter the cost.

Review

"Packed with double entendres, humorous dialogue and situations, and a black cat that will capture the readers imagination, this is a joyful, timeless fantasy that teens will savor." --Booklist, starred review "Readers who enjoy fairy-tale romance and intrigue with multiple strong heroines, an enigmatic cat, and a bit of reading challenge will adore this, and those who are already acquainted with Princess Ben will be glad to see her again."--Bulletin, starred review  "Richly developed characters, humor, exciting plot twists, and, of course, magic combine to craft a most enjoyable read. Fans of Gail Carson Levine will be charmed by this witty, whimsical fantasy. Exceptional!"--School Library Journal, starred review

Synopsis

Magic, cunning, and one very special cat join forces in this hilarious, extraordinary tale by the author of the Dairy Queen trilogy and Princess Ben. Princess Wisdom, known as Dizzy, longs for a life of adventure beyond the staid old

kingdom of Montagne.  Tips, a soldier, longs to keep his true identity a secret. Fortitude, an orphaned maid, longs only for Tips.

These three souls might possibly attain their dreams while preserving their empire from ruin — if only they can bear one anothers company long enough to come up with a plan.

obert Vantauge cannot imagine why anyone would try to kill Princess Aurelia. It has been years since he saw her last, but he still remembers her bright wit and sharp intelligence. When he hears that she is in danger, he goes to the palace immediately. There he finds her amid suitors and schemers, with no idea whatsoever that her life is being threatened. As he struggles to find the assassin, he also struggles with his rapidly growing feelings for his former classmate. This book has an interesting mixture of genres and styles. It is fantasy, but there is no magic. It is set in a court, but there is more than a hint of the Wild West about it. The characters, major and minor, are well written and believable. I love Aurelia's sarcasm and Robert's ability to stand up to her, the two of them together are fun to read about. This book ends with great promise for a sequel, and that sequel, Exile, is coming out in just a couple of weeks. I can hardly wait to read it!

Though this is written as a teen book as an adult I enjoyed it immensely. I would recommend it to any teen looking for a wonderful read with fresh and delightful dialogue; though any hopeless romantic like me would love the book as well. The characters are amazing and written so well you can't help but feel you know them. I fell in love with Aurelia's compassion and spunk and hope to find out more about her adventures. I would also recommend this book to any young horse lovers out there. I am intrigued by the world she created combining palace and frontier life.

Aurelia - she caught my eye from the beginning when she was sitting uncomfortably at her sister's coming out party--wishing to be anywhere else! Her character grew on me throughout the book, she has more to reveal I believe! She is stubborn, witty, sarcastic, and quite the heroine despite nearly getting herself killed! Her supporting characters are also fascinating--from the tall horseman named Drew in his top hat to her hapless comrade and classmate, Robert. I can't wait to see where her next adventure will lead...
