Harper C.: Five Book Friday: Uncanny Graphic Novels (0 comment)
We are in the thick of winter here in the Pacific Northwest, which means it's dark, damp, and chilly. Rather than escaping to stories with warmer, brighter climates, I personally want nothing more than to dive deep into gothic and uncanny fiction as the wind rattles my windows at night...

Publisher Comments

The accepted image of the Average American man as created by Oprah, Dr. Phil, network sitcoms, and a slew of other mass media outlets is one of an oafish retard happy to swallow down gallons of his significant other's crap in the hopes of being allowed to have sex with her once a week or at least watch some football.

The unnamed narrator of Average American Male is in his late twenties, has an unimportant job, plays video games, and hangs out with his friends and his girlfriend. But that's not all. He unabashedly reveals every thought that goes through his head, from his sexual fantasies involving his annoying girlfriend and other women he encounters, his masturbation sessions while watching porn, and his disgust with his annoying girlfriend and a majority of the people he comes across.

In the course of this hilariously honest book, our narrator suffers through a relationship with his fat–assed girlfriend until he finds the perfect girl. But when he moves into the new relationship, he slowly learns that all women are pretty much the same, that man's true desires will never be fulfilled, and the decision between living life alone or biting the marriage bullet must be made.

Review

"The plot is, to be charitable, episodic....[The narrator's] narcissism is unbounded....The Main Event of Portnoy's Complaint, without the wit." Kirkus Reviews

Review

"[A] brilliant send-up of the way...the male point of view has been misrepresented by militant feminists." Toby Young, New York Times bestselling author of How to Lose Friends and Alienate People

Synopsis

An offensive, in-your-face, brutally honest and completely hilarious look at male inner life and sexual fantasy--sure to be one of the most controversial books of the year.

Synopsis

"I can't figure out if this book is a heart-felt dispatch from the front line in the battle of the sexes or a brilliant send-up of the way in which the male point of view has been misrepresented by militant feminists. I suspect it may be both." --Toby Young, New York Times bestselling author of How to Lose Friends and Alienate People

An offensive, in-your-face, brutally honest and completely hilarious look at male inner life and sexual fantasy. In the course of this hilariously honest book, our narrator suffers through a relationship with his vapid wannabe-actress girlfriend until he finds the perfect girl. But when he moves into the new relationship, he slowly learns that all women are pretty much the same, that man's true desires will never be fulfilled, and the decision between living life alone or biting the marriage bullet must be made.

Synopsis

A debut novel that is sure to be one of the most controversial books of the year — a brutally honest and completely hilarious look at male inner life and sexual fantasies.

Chad Kultgen has written the most stunning debut novel I've ever read. It is profane, self-indulgent, funny, and the most accurate depiction of a young American male's life I could imagine, uncannily like my own life forty years ago. I even recommended it to a female student of mine to get an idea what goes on inside men's brains. I can't wait to start on his second novel THE LIE. Write on, Chad Kultgen!

I loved this book. It had to be the funniest thing I have ever read. Every page was a laugh, and I cannot wait to read more by this author. The only thing that still perplexes me is whether the book was meant to be a satire on the way men are viewed or if it is based on honest accounts of men. Either way, I love it, and even as a woman I could relate to it.

Gentlemen, This book is one you'll purchase and give to your friends with a serious "read it now" mentioning. I don't read books, seriously. But I saw the "really want to know what he's thinking" ads for it and knew it simply had to be read. I read it in less than 24 hours (mostly at work, naturally) and you will too. It's simply ingenious. Mr. Kultgen put on past what just about every one of us 20-somethings think but can't say. I'd love to meet him and find out how he did it. Just read it.
