Before the Fall begins on a foggy summer night, where ten people-nine privileged, one a down-on-his-luck painter-board a private jet in Martha's Vineyard. The plane never reaches its destination, and the only survivors are Scott Burroughs-the painter-and a six-year-old boy, the last remaining member of a very wealthy media mogul's family.

In chapters that weave between the gripping survival story and its aftermath of Scott and his young companion, with the lives of the passengers and crew members before they board the plane, a picture starts to emerge of the mystery surrounding the crash. As the crimes and intrigues of the passengers begin to unravel, odd coincidences and suggestions of conspiracy arise. Could it be a coincidence that so many influential people died in one plane? Was it mechanical or human error, or could it be that there was something more nefarious at work? And what to make of the fact that Scott had spent years before the crash painting pictures of disasters?

Though quick-paced and suspenseful, at the heart of Before the Fall are the fundamental questions of fate and human nature. How any historical event, when examined in detail, yields suspicious facts. We are pattern-seeking animals seeing faces in clouds. Amidst all the conspiracists and sycophants alike, the book is ultimately about the relationship of Scott and the young boy. As the possibilities for the crash swirl around them, their fragile relationship glows at the heart of the novel, illuminating not only how we are all inextricably linked, family and stranger alike, but also how we seek to find meaning in even the most incomprehensible of tragedies.

Synopsis

WINNER OF THE 2017 EDGAR AWARD FOR BEST NOVEL
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
From the Emmy, PEN, Peabody, Critics' Choice, and Golden Globe Award-winning creator of the TV show Fargo comes the thriller of the year.
On a foggy summer night, eleven people--ten privileged, one down-on-his-luck painter--depart Martha's Vineyard on a private jet headed for New York. Sixteen minutes later, the unthinkable happens: the plane plunges into the ocean. The only survivors are Scott Burroughs--the painter--and a four-year-old boy, who is now the last remaining member of an immensely wealthy and powerful media mogul's family.
With chapters weaving between the aftermath of the crash and the backstories of the passengers and crew members--including a Wall Street titan and his wife, a Texan-born party boy just in from London, a young woman questioning her path in life, and a career pilot--the mystery surrounding the tragedy heightens. As the passengers' intrigues unravel, odd coincidences point to a conspiracy. Was it merely by dumb chance that so many influential people perished? Or was something far more sinister at work? Events soon threaten to spiral out of control in an escalating storm of media outrage and accusations. And while Scott struggles to cope with fame that borders on notoriety, the authorities scramble to salvage the truth from the wreckage.
Amid pulse-quickening suspense, the fragile relationship between Scott and the young boy glows at the heart of this stunning novel, raising questions of fate, human nature, and the inextricable ties that bind us together.

All the reviews I have read of BEFORE THE FALL have praised it, some going so far as to say that it’s the best mystery/thriller of 2016. Believe it. BEFORE THE FALL is the best mystery/thriller in recent years. No kidding. GONE GIRL and THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN, the 2015 books that so many other mysteries/thrillers since then have been compared to, don’t hold a candle to BEFORE THE FALL. That is, BEFORE THE FALL is much better than those earlier books, much more literate and unputdownable at the same time. A reviewer on bookreporter.com, although she named this book a “Bets On Pick,” said that if she had edited BEFORE THE FALL, she would have cut more. I disagree. I didn’t want the book to end, so the more the author, Noah Hawley, told me about the characters, the better. Simply put, the story begins with a plane crash into the ocean. There are two survivors. BEFORE THE FALL examines the backgrounds of each passenger and crew member. It also shows the experiences of the survivors after the fall. The mystery throughout: why did the plane crash and was someone responsible? NOTE: One of the passengers on that ill-fated plane was a top executive at a 24-hour cable TV news station that is obviously meant to be Fox News, although the fictional TV station, per policy, makes (rather than just reports) news. And one of the news show hosts, who ”reports” recorded (bugged) telephone conversations of one of the survivors, is NOT, I’m sure, meant to be Bill O’Reilly.

This 5th novel by award-winning Noah Hawley reads like a screenplay. This is likely no coincidence given that Noah is an accomplished television producer and screenwriter, producing and writing on the TV series Bones as well as the Academy Award winning film Fargo. He is doing what he does best in Before the Fall. Creating rich characters I felt strongly about – good guys I loved and villains I loved to hate. A short-haul corporate jet departing from Martha’s Vineyard crashes with a number of passengers, some there simply by casual invite. Two people survive. One a four-year old boy named JJ, and the other, the man who saved him. Enter the media pit bulls, characters in the industry who are unethical or whose main goal is sensationalism and trying to dig up scandal. Yep, sounds like what we have in our real lives in the 24-hour news cycle of today where our media has lost its dignity in search of higher ratings. Several chapters are dedicated in introducing the passengers, their stories to include perspectives and moments leading up to the fateful flight. Hawley’s characters jump off the page: 56-year old billionaire David Bateman who became rich running a twenty-four hour news network, Gus, the lead investigator at NTSB to analyze and dissect the tragedy, and my favorites - 4-year old JJ who lost his parents and sister on the plane, and Scott, a struggling artist suddenly put into the limelight as a hero.
