Keith M.: Powell's Picks Spotlight: Jacqueline Woodson and Leo Espinosa's 'The World Belonged to Us' (0 comment)
I’m a nostalgia skeptic. I say that as someone in the final days of his thirties, an age when all the normal human inclinations — pushed along by Big Culture — are driving many of us elder millennials to remember just how good things — especially products — used to be...

Winner of the 2017 EDGAR AWARD FOR BEST NOVEL and the 2017 INTERNATIONAL THRILLER WRITERS AWARD FOR BEST NOVEL

FROM THE AWARD-WINNING CREATOR OF FARGO COMES "ONE THE YEAR'S BEST SUSPENSE NOVELS" (NEW YORK TIMES).

On a foggy summer night, eleven people — ten privileged, one down-on-his-luck painter — depart Martha's Vineyard on a private jet headed for New York. Sixteen minutes later, the unthinkable happens: the plane plunges into the ocean. The only survivors are the painter Scott Burroughs and a four-year-old boy, who is now the last remaining member of an immensely wealthy and powerful media mogul's family.

Was it by chance that so many influential people perished? Or was something more sinister at work? A storm of media attention brings Scott fame that quickly morphs into notoriety and accusations, and he scrambles to salvage truth from the wreckage. Amid trauma and chaos, the fragile relationship between Scott and the young boy grows and glows at the heart of this stunning novel, raising questions of fate, morality, and the inextricable ties that bind us together.

Kristin Hannah raves, "Noah Hawley really knows how to keep a reader turning the pages...a complex, compulsively readable thrill ride of a novel."

Review

"[A] terrific thriller...an irresistible mystery.. a tale that's both an intriguing puzzle and a painful story of human loss." Washington Post By Patrick Anderson

Review

"Imagine that Agatha Christie had set a closed-room mystery on an airplane and included Wall Street and entertainment executive types in her lineup of suspects. Now imagine that airplane crashing into the Atlantic before the story even gets going....Mr. Hawley, the expert TV showrunner, obviously had the skills to pull this off." New York Times, "The Top Books of 2016"

Review

"Before the Fall is a ravishing and riveting beauty of a thriller. It's also a deep exploration of desire, betrayal, creation, family, fate, mortality, and rebirth. It's one part Dennis Lehane, one part Dostoevsky. I was spellbound from first page to last; I haven't fully recovered yet." Michael Cunningham, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Hours

Review

"Noah Hawley really knows how to keep a reader turning the pages, but there's more to the novel than suspense. On one hand, Before the Fall is a complex, compulsively readable thrill ride of a novel. On the other hand, it is an exploration of the human condition, a meditation on the vagaries of human nature, the dark side of celebrity, the nature of art, the power of hope and the danger of an unchecked media. The combination is a potent, gritty thriller that exposes the high cost of news as entertainment and the randomness of fate." New York Times Book Review By Kristin Hannah

Review

"This is one of the year's best suspense novels, a mesmerizing, surprise-jammed mystery that works purely on its own, character-driven terms....Mr. Hawley has made it very, very easy to race through his book in a state of breathless suspense." New York Times By Janet Maslin

I knew that having just been to Martha's Vineyard was not reason enough to buy this book, but I was hoping it would add a layer of enjoyment to the reading. Turns out very little happens on the island, though that does not in any way detract from the quality of the writing. For the most part, it is a tale well told, with strong, believable characters and sharp pacing - the chapter breaks serve more to draw the reader inexorably on than to suggest a pause. Much of the media coverage of the incident is sadly familiar given today's 24 hour news cycle. Unfortunately, the denouement was disappointing, enough so to drop this from a five-star to a three-star (maybe three and a half, if fractions were permitted), perhaps in comparison to the strength of the rest of the novel, but a disappointment nonetheless.

Wooowee, this one’s a scorcher, not for sheer action, but as a wonderful page-turner/what’s next type of novel. It starts with a small jet crash and goes forward and backward in time, advancing the story and giving background. I really enjoyed learning more about what came before and what’s next. It has a contemporary artist, movers and shakers, their families at its core, and its up-to-the-minute send up of media monsters made it all the more timely. Read it with gusto.

You know you are in the hands of an excellent writer when you are holding your breath as you read, even when you know the outcome of the scene. As Hawley dramatises the event outlined on the back of the book, I was held in suspense. Recent history and the origin and rise of a new type of news network enrich the story. I can't wait to see what happens next!
