Esther Yi: The Writers That Haunt Me: Esther Yi’s Bookshelf for 'Y/N' (0 comment)
I’m haunted by a handful of writers all long dead. They set the standard; naturally I fail. Anything I read of theirs promptly enters my bloodstream, whereupon mysterious internal fomentation proceeds. Y/N is simply the latest extrusion, a concerted one...

Publisher Comments

Jon Winokur defines and classifies irony and contrasts it with coincidence and cynicism, and other oft-confused concepts that many think are ironic. He looks at the different forms irony can take, from an irony deficiency to visual irony to an understatement, using photographs and relate-able examples from pop culture.  * "Irony in Action" looks at irony in language, both verbal and visual, while "Bastions of Irony" and "Masters of Irony" look at institutions and individuals steeped in irony, though not always intentionally.  PLUS:

* The Annals of Irony looks at irony, and its lack thereof, throughout history.  A delight for anyone with a smart, dark sense of humor.

Review

"This gleefully witty treatise, a playful exploration of irony by someone who has mastered it himself, opens with definitions of irony and explanations of its many forms. Winokur (The Portable Curmudgeon ) then progresses through the "Annals of Irony," dating from 423 B.C.E. to the present, and he bolsters his chapters with generous helpings of quotes from public personages notable for their senses of irony. While he explores the historical aspects of irony, he also cites examples from current masters of the form, e.g., comedians Ali G and Sarah Silverman. Readers who do not appreciate cultural phenomena like Seinfeld or Curb Your Enthusiasm may not care to digest the text fully, but those who enjoy The Onion or The Simpsons should find much entertaining here." --Library Journal

Synopsis

The author of The Portable Curmudgeon defines and explores the various uses of irony in history and the modern world, providing a wealth of demonstrative quotes while sharing tongue-in-cheek observations about how irony is applied by politicians and celebrities. 30,000 first printing.

As a true expert on the matter of Irony, in "Big Book of Irony" Winokur provides his mastery of the device's inherent, Saharan-dry humor which, ironically, can be lost on those whose mentally-masturbatory attempts at academic analysis, only, of it as a simply "interesting" literary tool only takes them further from having any grasp whatsoever on its deepest meaning, and--bonus irony--unwittingly demonstrates lack of wit when they give a book like this only a 2-star rating. Even better is the DOUBLE(!) bonus irony of someone making obvious effort to write intelligently about a book missing the mark while ironically themselves missing the whole point. This is an important addition to any intelligent library. In sum, I strongly advise readers NOT buying this book when copies occasionally pop up at Powells. I want them ALL for me, to buy up as gifts for my friends, which I repeatedly do.

Those seeking for a thoughtful treatise on a much discussed and much misunderstood topic, will be disappointed in this sad excuse for a book. Basically, it's a haphazard compendium of quotations and anecdotes that does little to clarify a sensibility and literary device that, despite premature rumors of its death, is alive and well in our culture. Is it ironic that this book sucks? Not really.
