Powell's Picks of the Month

Staff Pick

There are a lot of reasons why Born a Crime is one of the best books I've read this year. Trevor Noah is a proven storyteller, so there's that. His life story is worth telling — the circumstances of his birth, the illegality and audacity of his very existence, so there's that. And then he provides a somehow totally new critique of race, because it's South Africa, not America. It's the same, but also totally different. This book was so good, I read it and then listened to the audiobook. Recommended By Britt A., Powells.com

Publisher Comments

The compelling, inspiring, and comically sublime story of one man’s coming-of-age, set during the twilight of apartheid and the tumultuous days of freedom that followed.

Trevor Noah’s unlikely path from apartheid South Africa to the desk of The Daily Show began with a criminal act: his birth. Trevor was born to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison. Living proof of his parents’ indiscretion, Trevor was kept mostly indoors for the earliest years of his life, bound by the extreme and often absurd measures his mother took to hide him from a government that could, at any moment, steal him away. Finally liberated by the end of South Africa’s tyrannical white rule, Trevor and his mother set forth on a grand adventure, living openly and freely and embracing the opportunities won by a centuries-long struggle.

Born a Crime is the story of a mischievous young boy who grows into a restless young man as he struggles to find himself in a world where he was never supposed to exist. It is also the story of that young man’s relationship with his fearless, rebellious, and fervently religious mother — his teammate, a woman determined to save her son from the cycle of poverty, violence, and abuse that would ultimately threaten her own life.

The stories collected here are by turns hilarious, dramatic, and deeply affecting. Whether subsisting on caterpillars for dinner during hard times, being thrown from a moving car during an attempted kidnapping, or just trying to survive the life-and-death pitfalls of dating in high school, Trevor illuminates his curious world with an incisive wit and unflinching honesty. His stories weave together to form a moving and searingly funny portrait of a boy making his way through a damaged world in a dangerous time, armed only with a keen sense of humor and a mother’s unconventional, unconditional love.

Review

"A gritty memoir... studded with insight and provocative social criticism... with flashes of brilliant storytelling and acute observations." Kirkus Reviews

Review

"[A] substantial collection of staggering personal essays.... Incisive, funny, and vivid, these true tales are anchored to his portrait of his courageous, rebellious, and religious mother who defied racially restrictive laws to secure an education and a career for herself — and to have a child with a white Swiss/German even though sex between whites and blacks was illegal.... [Trevor Noah’s] electrifying memoir sparkles with funny stories... and his candid and compassionate essays deepen our perception of the complexities of race, gender, and class." Booklist (Starred Review)

Trevor Noah on PowellsBooks.Blog

Born a Crime: Stories From a South African Childhood is my first book, a collection of humorous stories and personal essays that all work together to form a kind of coming-of-age memoir. It’s about my life growing up as a mixed-race kid under apartheid and during the difficult years that came after it fell, but it’s really a book about my mother, who...

Trevor Noah’s memoir includes enough humor to entertain and enough content to educate. I didn’t realize how little I knew about South Africa until I read his story.

Hi, Heard the audible of Born a Crime. In my opininon it can't be better written . It bought to light one of the worst injustice that a certain section of mankind thinks it has the right to inflict on another based on the color of ones skin.We are supposedly the most evolved spieces in the world but we are way behind when it comes to compassion and kindness. I was in awe of the strength of the boy and Mom to stand up against all odds .There are miracles in the world but one does need the value and an inner drive to be able to seize the ones when it gets thrown at you.The stories about the fallacies of human atrocities and behaviour should have made me sad and I would have tried to forget the sadness through the day but because it was tinted with comedy it has stayed longer ..has left a lasting impression..and I related with the human stories so much that I want my daughter who is an avid reader to read this book as soon as possible.I feel it will make an impact as she is slowly venturing into the world of grown ups..and definitely needs to understand ..Life is not a bed of roses.

South African comedian Trevor Noah seemingly came out of nowhere in 2015 to take over one of the most highly sought out posts in television: hosting "The Daily Show" when Jon Stewart stepped down. These are incredibly big shoes to fill and, while he's struggled, I think he's started to make the show his own, and I appreciate that Stewart went with an unknown. Those expecting his memoir "Born a Crime" are in for a shock. Noah grew in Johannesburg at the end of the apartheid era and experienced racism (he's mixed race), poverty, violence, police brutality, and an abusive stepfather. It's heavy stuff, but Noah avoid self-pity and presents his remarkable childhood in a gritty, unadorned, and compelling manner. It's a good book on its own, but is also casts a different light on Noah and makes his success all the more impressive. Another good book about growing up South African is "Kaffir Boy."

The title of this book is in reference to the law under apartheid that made it illegal for people of different races to marry. Trevors' father was white and his mother was colored. He was literally born a crime. He describes growing up in South Africa in a most difficult period for a person of mixed race. Trevor writes with intelligence and humor. His description of the people's,the history and the politics of this area are most enlightening. What I liked most however was the central focus of the book, Trevor and his mother and the trials and tribulations they endured together. He is a son to be proud of.
