Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

This is my third copy. We used it to start a conversation with our (then) 7 yr old who is an Aspie. The highlights: - AS is a continuum, not a definition - AS is not a sickness - Great overview of how an Aspie may/or might not act given certain situations. My son spent the next few days reading a passage here and there. He asked questions as he processed. It really helped him at a time he came home asking 'why am I different?', 'why do I think differently,' and 'I do not like myself.' You can see that the discussion, in combination with the book, really helped him understand things he already knew but could not properly categorize. He still refers to it from time to time. In fact, he is putting together a presentation for his class on AS. He is using the book as one of his main sources as he plans to tell his peers that he has AS. To let them know it does not define him, but does help explain some of his unexpected behavior. Highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a healthy and gentle way to approach the subject with their child. I buy an additional copy from time to time to give to teachers or friends to help them get a sense of AS.
