Synopsis
Excerpt from Catalogue of Plants: Growing Without Cultivation in the County of Nantucket, Mass
The island flora interests all botanists from its peculiarity; those from the interior notice first the coast plants, but from whatever part of New England they come, they are surprised at the occurrence of species not to be expected in this latitude - between forty and fifty perhaps - a large number for the small region. Some belong to more northern localities, but these are far less numerous than the southern plants, some of which have never been found elsewhere in New England. It was a great pleas ure to several of the collectors named in the following pages to take their discoveries to Dr. Gray, - our heaths, smilaxes, utricularias, etc.; he said at last that he was surprised at nothing from Nantucket.
