Esther Yi: The Writers That Haunt Me: Esther Yi’s Bookshelf for 'Y/N' (0 comment)
I’m haunted by a handful of writers all long dead. They set the standard; naturally I fail. Anything I read of theirs promptly enters my bloodstream, whereupon mysterious internal fomentation proceeds. Y/N is simply the latest extrusion, a concerted one...

Synopses & Reviews

Synopsis

"Sarai Walker has done it again. With The Cherry Robbers she upends the Gothic ghost story with a fiery feminist zeal." --Maria Semple

The highly anticipated second novel from Sarai Walker, following her "slyly subversive" (EW) cult-hit Dietland--a feminist gothic about the lone survivor of a cursed family of sisters, whose time may finally be up.

New Mexico, 2017: Sylvia Wren is one of the most important American artists of the past century. Known as a recluse, she avoids all public appearances. There's a reason: she's living under an assumed identity, having outrun a tragic past. But when a hungry journalist starts chasing her story, she's confronted with whom she once was: Iris Chapel.

Connecticut, 1950: Iris Chapel is the second youngest of six sisters, all heiresses to a firearms fortune. They've grown up cloistered in a palatial Victorian house, mostly neglected by their distant father and troubled mother, who believes that their house is haunted by the victims of Chapel weapons. The girls long to escape, and for most of them, the only way out is marriage. But not long after the first Chapel sister walks down the aisle, she dies of mysterious causes, a tragedy that repeats with the second, leaving the rest to navigate the wreckage, to heart-wrenching consequences.

Ultimately, Iris flees the devastation of her family, and so begins the story of Sylvia Wren. But can she outrun the family curse forever?

Synopsis

Sarai Walker has done it again. With The Cherry Robbers she upends the Gothic ghost story with a fiery feminist zeal. --Maria Semple

The highly anticipated second novel from Sarai Walker, following her "slyly subversive" (EW) cult-hit Dietland--a feminist gothic about the lone survivor of a cursed family of sisters, whose time may finally be up.?

IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE FIRST DAY OF THE REST OF THEIR LIVES.

INSTEAD IT WAS THE LAST.

Iris Chapel and her five elegant sisters, all of them heiresses to the Chapel firearms fortune, live cloistered in a lavish Victorian mansion. Neglected by both a distant, workaholic father and a mentally troubled mother--who believes their home is haunted by the victims of Chapel weapons--the sisters have grown up with only each other for company. They long to escape the eerie fairy tale of their childhood and move forward into the modern world, but for young women in 1950s Connecticut, the only way out is through marriage.

Yet it soon becomes clear that for the Chapel sisters, marriage equals death.

When the eldest sister walks down the aisle, tragedy strikes. The bride dies mysteriously the very next day, leaving her family and the town in shock. But this is just the beginning of a chain of disasters that will make each woman wonder whether true love will kill her, too. Only Iris, the second-youngest, finds a way to escape--but can she outrun the family curse forever?

Sarai Walker, the acclaimed author of the cult-hit novel Dietland, building off the Gothic tradition of Shirley Jackson, brings to life this riveting, deliciously twisted feminist tale, a gorgeous and provocative page-turner about the legacy of male power and the cost of female freedom.

Erudite and Chilling, the perfect summer read. This is a thriller gothic historical that commences of approximately the 1950's, amongst six sisters in the south. What I undeniably fancied right away was how posthastedly I could relate to Iris Chase a.k.a Sylvia Wren. I too have had formerly thoughts of being able to restablished living a normal life by simply changing my name. Along with being able to relate to Sylvia. I soon found that I could sympathizable with Sylvia and her sisters for how horrendously relatable I found the family dynamic to be. I felt such an eerie relatablness to that of my own patriarchal based familyhood life. With which it was as if the author had lifted the folds of the patriarchal dirtiness that I'd try to keep in the dark for how frightened I was to see it in the light for how it was truly, ugly and damaging. If my relatabiltiy to these few things didn't shock you the ending definitely will. Also, I love the cover of the book. The eye-catching pink flowers clashing well with the gun. They absolutely go together very well. I've never seen any cover like it before, so it's definitely aesthetically unique.

This book was a crazy ride. I didn’t really know what to expect, but it was not what I got. The book is told in two timelines the present 2017 with famous artist Sylvia Wren faced with a journalist who has tracked down her hidden past as Iris Chapel. This starts Sylvia to reminisce by writing her tragic past in journal form which is the second timeline for the book. Iris was one of 6 Chapel girls who appeared to be cursed. When it was first predicted that something bad would happen I was not expecting the something bad that came at all. The book had a bit of a gothic and supernatural bent but was generally good historical fiction. The writing was good and the story, while incredibly strange, was engrossing. The characters were interesting and even though very few of them were like able they were believable and kept my attention. This was my first book Sarai Walker, but I will be looking for future books by her.

I read the first chapter and had that rare gut feeling of knowing that this was a book I was going to love. So I would recommend this: read the first chapter, and if the writing connects with you in that first part, and the narration and story so far intrigues you, don't look up any other reviews and go into the rest of the book blind. Read this if you love gothic books with gorgeous prose writing, feminist and queer elements, some spookiness, and a whole lot of tragedy.

I was a bit skeptical about Cherry Robbers after Dietland but I was VERY pleasantly surprised!!! I absolutely love a good gothic novel and this really contributed to the genre. Cherry Walkers follows Sylvia’s Wren’s life - and the life of her supposedly haunted family - over the course of a few generations. I liked how the core mystery was written subtly, I think that added a lot to the tone of the novel being “gothic”. The writing was exquisite and the characters were beautifully written. I also really enjoyed how the author tied in relevant problems for today’s world and showed how they aren’t new, we are just now able to publicly talk about them. This of course leads to some of the ultimate horrors of the book and it’s era: misogyny. And as a feminist woman myself, I know there is nothing more horrifying - and sadly still relevant - than that. This is officially one of my favorite reads of the year. 5/5 ☺️

The Cherry Robbers is a masterful, atmospheric work of historical fiction and gothic horror. The main character, Sylvia Wren, a reclusive, famous iconic American artist is writing her memoirs in 2017, recalling her early life in the 1950s. She was Iris Chapel, one of six sisters, heirs to a firearms fortune, with a controlling father and a disturbed, distant mother, living in a big mansion shaped like a wedding cake. Her two oldest sisters die within 24 hours of getting married, and one by one her other sisters meet a similar tragic fate. Sarai creates a creeping sense of danger and suspense with her decadent, exquisite prose. The curse that afflicts the Chapel women ties in with female sexuality and the role of women in patriarchal 1950s society, their voices ignored and disregarded. The natural world (especially plants), violence against women, mental health, and the power of art are also important themes explored in this novel. The Cherry Robbers was incredibly well written and completely addictive. I loved it and was deeply affected by it.
