The Book of Three is a tale, that takes place in the Middle Ages. Taran, the main protagonist, goes on a journey and faces The Horned King a couple of times. The Horned Kind is an evil man that always travels with his army, never alone. In my opinion, Lloyd Alexander does a good job in maintaining the reader active in the story and turning each page with excitement. The Book of Three is extremely action packed. Taran faces many jaw dropping adventures that make you keep on reading more and more. I recommend this book to middle school students, for it will be of an easier reading level for adults, but can be read as a fast read for adults.

Do we all dream of great adventure, but never get the excitement? This is exactly what Taran, the main character of this book felt before his pig ran away. A chase through the woods leads Taran far from home and into danger, because great evil roams the mythical land of Prydain. Along his journey to find the pig and return home, Taran collects a group of strange but wonderful friends. As Taran's journey precedes, he finds himself battling to beat evil so good may triumph and so his home kingdom does not fall. This book is a fun fantasy to be read by mainly the Middle School audience because the story may bewilder younger readers, but may be to easy of a read for older readers. Since this book has an amazing plot, nothing should stop anyone from reading a great fantasy.

The Book of Three: Review Great Read. This wonderful story is about a young man by the name of Taran. He is nothing but a simple assistant pig-keeper, until one of the pigs runs away and Taran is compelled to go search for her. From this treacherous journey Taran meets new people and becomes a complete different person. I enjoyed reading this book because of the author's style of writing. I like how he includes cliffhangers in his books that convinces you to read on and never put it down. I also enjoyed the detailed descriptions that help set the mood of the book and allow the reader to enjoy the book that much more. I recommend this story to someone who loves fantasy and doesn't mind the time of the middle ages. The main theme that ties the story together is that anyone can be a hero no matter how big or powerful you are. I have to warn you though, immediatiley when you pick this great book up you will not put it down.

A book for fantasy fans. Taran is teenage Assistant Pig-Keeper living in Caer Dallben. His journey begins when Hen Wen, a magical pig that can predict the future, runs away. Taran must catch her before she falls into the hands of the evil Horned King. Through his journey he encounters new friends and possibly new enemies. I myself am not much of a fantasy reader so this book was not a personal favorite of mine. My opinion of this book is that for you to enjoy it you have to enjoy fantasy novels. I found the book to be somewhat lagging in the ability to keep me coming back for more, and the characters seemed to be 2D and flat. I would recommend the book for kids 11 and up. Something that also bothered me in a way was the sexism and stereotypes of Taran and Gwydion that boys are the heros and girls can't be brave and heroic. A main theme that arose to me was that bravery and honor will conquer always. My overall opinion is that the book has a good message to it but it is really for fantasy readers.

The Book of Three combines the elements of adventure and fantasy into one journey that transforms the characters involved. This is a common hero and villain book, in which the villain must be defeated. The concepts in this book are not advanced, and can be grasped by any level reader. The Lord of the Rings series compares to this book because in both the main character is on a adventure to defeat evil. Taran is the main character in this book, and his companions are Eilonwy, Gurgi, and Fflewddur. I found this story simple and lacking themes at times."Taran finds himself fighting so that good may triumph over evil," that tells you whats going to happen during the course of the book. Its plot has been over used and does not hold your attention for long. Overall this book is very simple and is not very good, unless you enjoy the fantasy genre.

The Book Of Three is a short Medieval Time fairytale with all kinds of characters. A group of friends go on a journey to save a pig, but not just any kind of pig. Soon, after what starts out to be a walk through the forest, turns into a peasant boy finding his inner hero. This is a great read for young adults who face similar problems as the characters in this book. During their journey Taran makes many mistakes, which in some cases lead to disaster, but he learns from them and moves on. I think the themes in this book are important and well explained. One of them is, you can not judge someone by what they appear to be like on the outside. But you have to look deeper to find their true personality.

Imagine yourself trying to find something , but stumbling into even more trouble . If you did, you have stepped into the shoes of Taran of Caer Dallben, the main character in the story. Overall, I thought this was a well written book about the Medieval times because it makes you feel like you were there. However, I thought the story could have had a better plot then running after an Oracular pig. This book has an abundant amount of description and details when describing the situations Taran manages to get himself into. If you're a reader that loves the Middle Ages and an adventure book, this is the kind of book you will want to read. In this book, it is almost like you are reading another version of Lord of the Rings because of the character similarities. If you love the Lord of the Rings series, you will deeply enjoy The Book of Three by Lloyd Alexander.

Imagine that you were facing death. Unable to run away but towards it. Fighting a battle against death. Well that is what happens to Taran and his companions. He must battle the warriors and leader of death. This is one of the many adventures that they encounter on their journey in the book, The Book of Three. Taran is the main character who is an assistant pig keeper but wants to be a hero. One day an important pig runs off and he must find and return the pig. while looking for the pig named Hen Wen, he comes upon many good and bad happenings. This book is quite entertaining. At first I thought I would not like it but as I read, I became engrossed with it. I think the author intended for The Book of Three to be read by upper elementary groups and up.

Lighting seared his arm and he was thrown violently to the ground.” The Book of Three is an adventurous book with a war lord with an elk skull over his face, chasing an assistant pig keeper. This book is a fantasy with an oracular pig, (this means that this pig can predict the future,) an evil war lord, and couple of sorceresses. Taran is an assistant pig keeper, and Gurgi is like golem ("lord of the rings" crazy creature) and is always searching for his crunchings and munchings. This duo along with three other characters come together to try to find an oracular pig and warn Caer Dathyl before the city is destroyed....... I would recommend this book to anybody from the age of 8 to 15 who likes a good adventure.

Imagine, you were an assistant pig keeper and the pig that you were looking after ran away deep into the forest. By finding this pig you could fulfill your dreams of becoming a hero. You have just walked into the shoes of the main character Taran, that is trying to find a pig that is important. As this boy goes on a journey to find the pig he meets a lot of new people and goes threw many challenges to becoming a hero. The plot of this book was alright and I thought that it got a little confusing in parts of the book because to many things were going on at once. Loyd Alexander's writing is descriptive and is suspenseful. It sometimes make you want to keep reading to find out what is going to happen next. You will need to read this adventurous fantasy book to find out the conclusion.

A great hero beloved by all. You risk your life everyday but it all pays off in the end. Everyone knows, respects, and wants to be just like you- now wake up! This is the life of Taran of Caer Dallben before a great change happens to him. "The Book of Three" by Lloyd Alexander, in my eyes, is a great book because it has a great blend of different types of fantasy, but is believable. Aside from all the mystical creatures and magic of course. I think this book takes place in the middle ages because it paints a great picture of what life was like back then. This book was written with such such detail on the feelings that as I was reading I felt like I shared the same mid as the main character. The main theme is courage because the characters risk their life for others so often. I recommend this book for everyone of all ages that love to feel a great thrill while reading a book.

I thought this was a fantastic story that was entertaining and full of action. Lloyd Alexander does a great job of keeping the reader on the edge of their seat. I found this book hard to put down. Hen Wen, a pig who can see the future, knows the cruel and ruthless Horned King is chasing after her to use her powers to strengthen the armies of evil, and has begun her frantic journey to safety. The assistant pig-keeper, Taran, sets out to find his pig and along the way, joins with other friendly characters who offer their loyalty. Their adventures are many, with exciting battles and unexpected twists. Each chapter leaves the reader wondering about the next.

The minute I picked this book up I knew it was more then just an ordinary book, it turned out to be a breathtaking thrill ride that never seemed to end. When Taran ventures into the woods chasing after the magical pig Hen Wen, he has no idea what he is getting into, and ends up learning the hard way. The Book of Three is an exciting, and some what ordinary fantasy of a young boy who wonders into something completely unknown to him. This book had amazing characters that I could relate to, because they are brave, whole hearted, and always seem to finish wht they start. I really enjoyed the events and obstacles the characters when through because they happened at realistic periods in the book and made the hole plot flow smoothly. Overall this is a four star book for me, and I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

What makes a hero? In The Book Of Three by Lloyd Alexander even the most unlikely boy can become a hero. when my teacher told us we were going to be reading a book about a fantasy pig I was very skeptical about reading it but now I am so glad I did. The story starts with Taran (the main character of the book and also an assistant pig keeper.) Taran is taking care of Hen-Wen. Now Hen-Wen isn't your average pig, she is an oracular pig. While Taran is watching her she breaks free and runs into the forest. She runs away because she knows that the Horned King is coming and she is afraid. Taran runs into the forest after Hen-Wen. Taran would have never expected the adventures he would come upon. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a great novel.

TARAN wanted to make a sword; but Coll, charged with the practical side of his education, decided on horseshoes. And so begins Lloyd Alexander's first book in the Prydain series, the Book of Three. If you enjoyed the Hobbit then you will definitely enjoy this book. Taran, the newly promoted assistant pig-keeper, makes his first mistake when he chases after the escaped oracular pig which he was supposed to take care of. Through chasing the pig across the land he gets into to a larger adventure then he ever imagined. This book made me have mixed emotions, at some points I felt I was trotting along with Taran and his friends. This book is defiantly worth the read. At times it could drag along and bore me but those times ended quickly. to tell you the truth I was not satisfying

It is well-written by Lloyd Alexander, whom is a very great writer. This book is fast and easy to read but is entertaining at the same time. The theme of this book is that anyone can be a hero no matter who they are and what they look like as long as they have the courage to do something. The Book of Three is about a young teenager named, Taran who wishes to be a hero. All he does is dream about adventure, but he becomes an Assistant Pig-Keeper instead. This book is a classical middle age story, but is one of the best I have read. I think this because Lloyd Alexander changes the classical story theme of the damsels in distress and the knights in shining armor. This story is more about the main character (Taran) making a name for himself instead of being a assistant pig-keeper. He embarks on a journey to save a pig named Hen Wen. The book of Three, is a well written book. The Book of Three has action, suspense, and a lot of adventure.It is set in the middle ages and when you read it,it feels like you are here because the author is so vivid with his descriptions. There are many themes in this book but the main one that sticks out to me is "every living thing deserves our respect...be it humble or proud, ugly or beautiful". This theme says that you should respect living things no matter how they act or what the look like. This book is a well written, however the thing that I do not like about it is the way it is told by the author instead of the Taran. Running into the woods, after a pig that you are supposedly watching out for. For Taran, a young adult assistant pig keeper, this was the story that started changing his whole life. See this was not just a pig, but an oracular pig named Hen-Wen who held an extravagant amount of power. Not only did Taran want him back, but so did the Evil Horned King. Throughout the story, the chase for Hen-Wen continued with "thrashing and slashings". I felt disappointed with the book, because I started out having an expectation that some event would happen that would switch the book up and make it less predictable. Yet, my expectation was not full filled, and I could start predicting what was going to happen. The characters were entertaining though. There strange and corky personality made me want to keep reading. Fun characters, but just okay story line. If you like a story that will give you a small amount of pleasure and characters to laugh about, you should mark The Book of Three by Lloyd Alexander, down on your summer reading list.

Adventure, suspense, cliff-hangers, and my favorite, comedy. The Book of Three has all of these characteristics, and more. With themes so true that you can use them for yourself. But my favorite theme in this book is about friendship. You need to trust your friends to get to where you are now. I also believe that, in yourself, there is a little part of your friends. So without them, you wouldn't be who you are today. On the other hand, this book also brought me sorrow from one of the characters we lose during the journey. But how about some positives? The main character in this book is a young teenager named, Taran. He wants to be a hero, but instead, he becomes an Assistant-Pig-Keeper. Sounds boring and grotesque, right? Well, not when you get to take care of an oracular pig named Hen Wen. After the pig runs off, he chases after it and bumps into the evil Horned King, another character. Shortly after this, Gwydion, the prince of Caer Dathyl, helps him because the Horned King slashed him. Taran and Gwydion find out that they are both going after Hen Wen and decide to look for her together. Now is when Taran's journey starts. The adventure starts, the suspense starts, the whole book starts. I'm not saying this is the best book I've ever read, but it is an entertaining book, especially because of the comedy Lloyd Alexander dashes in there. To me, this is a great mix of adventure, suspense, and comedy all in one exciting book.

Every child imagines a fairytale world with magical creatures, animals that have powers and evil witches that roam the land, right? Well what would happen if all of this came true, and lots of people were dependent on you to try and save what is rightfully theirs. Well that is exactly what the book of three is about. It is a fairly well written book and definitely deserves to take the time out of your life and read it. I personally think that this book is a good read for the young adults, it has good literary elements [ especially cliff hangers. ] This story has a very good theme/mood it teaches you a life lesson, probably one you have heard before, but a very important one. It teaches you that mistakes are just another path to your destination even if it takes longer, you will eventually get there. And who knows you may learn a lot from your mistakes, just like the protagonist in this story, Taran. Reading The Book Of Three you get the feeling that the author Lloyd Alexander [ wrote Time Cat, Firebirds, The Iron Ring, and Town Cats and Other Tales ] seems to have a special writing style, I would call this style very informal, or relaxed. Some examples are when he has the main characters just talking to each other and not resolving the problem at hand, of course this is just my opinion and some people may say that is just the flow of the story but, you will never know until you read this good book written by Lloyd Alexander. So pick up a copy of The Book Of Three, and read this interesting and action packed story about a land with magical creatures, evil roaming and spreading darkness throughout and meanwhile there is hope through one person.

If you are the type of reader who enjoys the mythical wonders of fantasy, love things that relate to the Medieval Times, or would just enjoy an adventure in a book, then "The Book Of Three," by Lloyd Alexander would be an excellent choice for you to read. In my honest opinion, this is a well thought out book with twists and turns throughout its events, but even though I could say it involves a lot of action, there are a few things that could have been improved. First of all, the main character in this story is a 12-14 year old boy named Taran, who has to travel on a journey with many new companions joining him along the way to get Hen Wen safe. (Hen Wen is a white pig with a corky personality that can see what will happen in the future, and a anonymous ruler named "The Horned King," is trying to steal her and use her powers in his favor.) Second, while reading this book I felt many different emotions such as fear, excitement, anxiety, relief, and the classic adrenaline rush. As in many books, you will find that the author will leave cliff hangers at the end of the chapters. An example would be, "Calling to the bard and Eilonwy to follow quickly , Taran ran on ahead. He stopped suddenly. To his left, on a high shelf of rock, crouched an enormous wolf with golden eyes and a lolling red tongue. Before Taran could draw his sword, the lean animal sprang." After reading that, I had become extremely curious if Taran would kill him, the wolf would kill Taran, or maybe even something unexpected could take place. Third, I kind of like the authors style of writing, but I have to admit that many times in the plot, he will peed through little events, but then make big deals about the events you're suppose to remember. I think if he put more detail into the awkward transitions, maybe the reader (including myself) would be able to understand the book better. But all in all, I consider this book worth reading a great adventure story that shows that you cannot complete something alone, because teamwork and friendship are portrayed so often.

But from his point of view, he is stuck in the small and boring town of Caer Dallben. But one day the animal he looks after escapes. He chases it beyond the realm of Caer Dallben and into the dark and dangerous places beyond. Taran must face insurmountable danger and also keep in place the new friendships he is forming. This would be a great book for teens who want a book full of action, adventure, and a touch of magic. So plunge into the world of Taran and let the adventure begin!

Imagine yourself in a land full of magic, but in that land lurks evil. That is the world of Taran. Taran is the protagonist. He is an average boy who lives in fantasy similar to the Middle Ages. Taran wants adventure and that is what he gets. During this time he meets a well-known hero, the evil war leader, and many more people on his grand adventure. This book is a very well written and exciting book. The Book of Three, tells a lot about a boy wanting to be a hero. I liked this book even though I am not a fantasy genre lover. I appreciated it because you can kind of relate to the character. Many people out there want excitement, and in the book you feel like you go through the adventure with Taran. It was good literature and was a pretty suspenseful book. This book is intended for young adults. To me, The Book of Three was a novel assigned to read and study in class; I am a middle school student. I was not particularly thrilled to read the book at first, especially after I was told by classmates that this is a story about a pig- not exactly accurate. However, I know now that The Book of Three, and the fantasy land of Prydain, hold a story that is not only wonderfully entertaining but meaningful as well.   The story begins with an oracular pig and Taran the Assistant Pig-Keeper. Taran is a young boy who longs for adventure as he lives his calm peasant life in the Middle Ages- until his pig runs away. From there, a journey filled with strange and wonderful characters unfolds, a rescue mission packed with the adventure that Taran dreamt of. This delightful story told by The Book of Three also shows us strong themes of courage, good versus evil, and heroism- that the true hero comes from within.   When reading The Book of Three, I especially loved the characters that Alexander created; they give to the story a touch of lightness and humor. They also portray the powerful themes without, so to speak, bogging the story down.  The Book of Three is written in a sophisticated manner, is fast-moving, another part I enjoyed, and a great quick read for children. Though the book did not make my top reading list, mostly because I do not enjoy the fantasy or Middle Ages genres, I still found The Book of Three to be an enjoyable and charming novel. I would recommend it to anyone who loves a Medieval Times adventure.

I thought the Book of Three, was an interesting yet plain book. There were a lot of themes and twists like, anyone can be a hero, or big things come in small packages. Some twists were when Taran meets Eilonwy and they seem to fall in a secret "love". Although it as a very slow read. When you read it, you get a sense of adventure and can create your own characters. This is because, in the book they give you bits and pieces of what the characters look like. So you can interpret who they are in your head. The Book of Three is about an orphan named Taran, a pig keeper assistant; dreaming to be a hero. Once the "special" pig runs away, Taran has to go into the wilderness and find her. On Taran's adventure he runs into many bumps in the road. Along with meeting other "friends" along the way. Throughout this story Taran figures out who he really, a hero.

He wants to do something fun and adventurous, but when his pig runs into the forest, he runs in the forest as well. While Taran is in there, he sees a very evil man that is a skeleton. The main character, in this epic novel, is Taran a know-it-all assistant pig keeper that yearns to become a hero or become a someone. The journey starts when Tarans pig, Hen Wen, escapes from her den and flees to the woods where Tarans quest begins. With danger lurking at every corner, Tarans world turns upside down while meeting some strange and unusual friends along the way. This magical book reminds me of a mix between Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. The Book has a sprinkle of Harry Potter's witches and spells and a touch of Lord of the Ring's friendship and adventure. I think with Lloyd Alexander's vivid imaginative writing with his twists and turns, this book is a must read for all fantasy lovers.

What makes of a true hero? A true hero is someone who saves the day, the moment, the world, or even a pig. In The Book of Three, Taran, an Assistant Pig Keeper, is off on a journey to find a valuable pig - Hen Wen - and to prove himself to be a real hero. The author also includes another theme, which is to never lose hope and keep looking for a solution. I liked the book because it captures the themes by using imagination and a bit of wit. The author did a great job creating suspense because there are still a couple of unanswered questions at the end of the book. I recommend this book to anyone that loves an adventure.

Lloyd Alexander Is one of the best fantasy writers that I have read. If you liked the lord of the rings you will definitely like this because Lloyd Alexander and J.R.R Tolken were great friends and Tolken taught Alexander a lot about writing fantasy. An example of how close the two stories are is that Gurgi and Gollum are a lot alike in characteristics. They are both creatures that live in the forest and speak in third person. You could say that it is a pretty descent novel but I have not read enough of this genre to get a good grip on fantasy. The main theme that I got out of Thee Book Of Three was that if you try hard enough you can achieve any goals that you you wish, for example Taran wants to complete a quest, Taran gets the opportunity Very soon after to prove his heroism.

Your pig has gone missing so you go to the forest to find it. You lurk behind the bushes and stumps, and try not to breathe so loudly. A man on a black horse dressed in red robes and on his head is a skull with antlers comes riding along with his massive army looking for your oracular pig. What are you supposed to do? After all you're only an assistant pig keeper. The Book of three by Lloyd Alexander is a trilling fast read about Taran's adventure, throughout the book Taran discovers himself and finds out what it truly means to be a hero. I would have to admit, at times this book was a tiny bit boring, but there were enough twist and turns to keep me reading on, the characters in the story were well presented and each one had their own personality.

In Prydain, a magical, fantastical world these things are not just possible they have actually happened. Taran, an assistant pig-keeper is hurtled on a treacherous journey for that very reason, losing his pig. This book is aimed for a reader of any age. It is fast paced and the wording is pretty simple. The heart, adventure ,and theme in this story make it easy to fall in love with. I give this book four out of five stars.

The Book of Three review When I first read this book I thought of it more as a book, but the more times I read it the better it got. This book is full of creatures of all sort from dead zombie warriors to small wolf like animals. It is also full of magic and good and evil. This is an amazing book full of adventure. The author uses great writing skills that tells you a great story. I recommend this book for all ages.

The Book of Three was a good book at some times. The reason why I say this is because some parts of the book were a little dull. For example the character "Gurgi" always says he wants "munchings and crunchings." Also most of the time they are on the run trying to get somewhere for almost half of the book. Beside that the book is okay. There are many elements of medieval times. For example when Gwydion got locked up in a dungeon. Also their are castles and knights. I would recommend this book to 6th and 7th graders because it is a challenging enough read for average 6 and 7th graders. Also the book catches interest of the age group of 6th and 7th graders.

Imagine your self as an assistant Pig-Keeper, going on a journey to find a lost pig, but then realize this is more then a journey... This is the story of Taran of Caer Dallben. This is one of my favorite books that I have ever read because you do not see characters from the book reference subjects from the real world. An example is " He drew a ponderous, leather-bound volume toward him called, The Book of Three." Lloyd Alexander did a fantastic job on the description and the adventure that Taran seems to get himself into. This book is for advanced readers of ages 11 to 14. Best Book Ever!!! If you liked the Lord of the Rings I guarantee you will love this mind captivating book. This story provides great adventure for all ages. This book is very similar to the Lord of the Rings, but there are some differences. For example there is no girl on the adventure in the Lord of the Rings. I think this is a good book because I never know what will happen next. Taran has always wanted to go on an adventure. He was just a normal Middle Ages assistant pig-keeper until everything changed when his prized pig escapes… Taran is a young boy who is getting bored of his simply life at home. He wants to embark on a adventure. A main theme in this story is anyone can become a hero if the situation is right. This is great book for anyone who likes fantasy. The only bad thing about this story is that it is very confusing at times, especially the beginning. This may make you want to read it again to clarify the confusion. The Book of Three was an extremely intriguing and compelling read. This book was action-packed at times, and was relaxed and cheerful at others. Lloyd Alexander did a outstanding job of balancing the perfect amounts of action and humor. In the book, Taran is an assistant Pig-Keeper who yearns for adventure. He hates his boring and dull life at Caer Dallben and wants some excitement in his life. He gets his chance when his pig runs away. His chase after the lost pig strands him far from his home. With the company of a few strange and amazing friends he meets on his journey, Taran sets off to find his pig. But along the way, he finds out evil king's diabolical plan. He and his friends must stop this evil from occurring or the good members of mankind will be gone forever. The Book of Three has some extremely strong themes. One extremely prevalent one was the theme "good vs evil". For example, when Taran first meets the Horned King, it is obvious he is an evil loathsome creature. In contrast, when Taran meets Gwydion, you know that he is a brave and kind-hearted hero. This book was a very good read. It was exciting and interesting. I recommend this book for more advanced because there is some advanced vocabulary that some may not understand. All in all, I think this is an great read and worth your while.

You may be wondering that as you read the summary on the back of 'The Book of Three,' but you'd be surprised to know that the assistant pig-keeper himself agreed with that thinking. Taran, a unique boy, had the bravery of someone who had been through much more than he himself had, this does nothing but aid him when this pig-keeper sets out on the adventure of any life time. The themes in this story are mostly saying that anyone could be a hero. Adventurous and unique, 'The Book of Three' will hold your attention over and over again.

The Book of Three is exciting, funny and confusing, it reminds me of a horror movie where your repeating don't open the door and they go and open the door. The main character throughout the whole story is Taran an ignorant assistant pig keeper who really wants to be a hero. I liked this book, but it is hard to understand until you get to the last few chapters. This is a good book for an advanced 11 year old to a regular 14 year old. This is a surprising story and I advise this book to anyone who is willing to read it, and I think it would be enjoyed.
