Synopsis

The murder of a leader of the Palestinian Martyrs Brigade leads to the arrest of George Saba, a Palestinian Christian accused of collaborating with the Israelis. Omar Yussef, a modest history teacher at a United Nations school in the West Bank, is impelled to investigate the murder to exonerate his former pupil, who he knows is innocent. As he struggles to save George, Omar Yussef is drawn into a complex plot where it is impossible to tell friend from enemy.

About the Author

Matt Beynon Rees is the former Jerusalem bureau chief for Time. His Omar Yussef mysteries include The Collaborator of Bethlehem (winner of the Crime Writers' Association New Blood Dagger Award) and A Grave in Gaza. He is also the author of the nonfiction work Cain's Field: Faith, Fratricide, and Fear in the Middle East.

`	agfthisbe , April 03, 2009 (view all comments by agfthisbe) The author takes you into the heart of the Palestinian uprising without taking sides other than being on the side of human goodness. As the main character, teacher Omar Yussef, tries to save the life of a former student, you learn what it is like to navigate the perils of life in a refugee camp outside Bethlehem. I learned about a situation from the inside that is impenetrable from news reports. There's a new book out featuring the same cast of characters, but I wanted to start at the beginning and I'm glad I did.
