Excerpt from Continental Traveller, 1833: The Journal of an Economical Tourist to France, Switzerland Italy
The following Tour through France and Switzerland to Rome, Naples, and Venice, returning by the Tyrol, Ger many, and the Netherlands, also a trip to the Pyrenees, comprises all the principal places in the route, with the different lakes, the distances from place to place, modes of travelling, expenses, and a variety of information cal culated to facilitate the journey and enhance its interest. It does not aspire to the dignity of a full-grown Road Book, professing rather to suggest general ideas of a Continental trip, than to expatiate on the various locali ties, for which more serious purpose various Guides will he mentioned, calculated to afford more minute informa tion. It is to be hoped, however, that this little vade mecum will be found useful to all classes of travellers to the economical, pointing out the means of saving both time and money; and to the afluent answering as a key to more voluminous Guides, by which a journey may be ex tended or curtailed at pleasure.
