Harper C.: Five Book Friday: Uncanny Graphic Novels (0 comment)
We are in the thick of winter here in the Pacific Northwest, which means it's dark, damp, and chilly. Rather than escaping to stories with warmer, brighter climates, I personally want nothing more than to dive deep into gothic and uncanny fiction as the wind rattles my windows at night...

Dark and Shallow Lies is the debut novel of Ginny Myers Sain, and guys – I am officially adding her to my auto-read list, as I was so blown away by this book. Now, this is exactly the sort of novel that I need in my life! A paranormal young adult thriller with lots of suspense and drama? Yes, please! Seriously, I was blown away by Dark and Shallow Lies and was so sad when it ended. Again, not because it was an upsetting end (the ending was quite perfect if you ask me) – but because it was over. I didn't want to say goodbye to this world. Not even for a second. Realistically, I know that this is a standalone novel, but I would not say no to this being the beginning of a series. A town full of psychics is so ripe for tales, don't you think? To be clear, Dark and Shallow Lies is not what I would call light reading. It covers child death, abuse, and missing persons. It does not shy away from these elements, as they are a huge part of what makes the town so messed up. But those layers and layers of secrets are part of what makes Dark and Shallow Lies such a thrilling novel to read. It's impossible to guess who is behind what or even the reason behind their lies. It's twisted and fascinating, in all the best ways. I want more like this, please!

Dark and Shallow Lies by Ginny Myers Sain was a thriller tale of psychics, ghosts and secrets in a small town known to be the most pshycic in the country. 4/5 stars In La Chachete Louisiana, there is every type of psychic you can imagine. Along with 10 children all born within a few months of each other, known as the Summer Children. Grey is returning for the summer after her twin flame Eloras disappearance, and Grey wants to get to the bottom of it. Along with flashbacks, and secrets, she gets a lot more than she bargained for. This was thrilling! Immediately were pulled into the action, and it doesn’t let up. It wasn’t one basic secret that kept you going, it was a small town entwined with so many secrets, it seems like everyone is attached to some horrific event. I loved the plot. It seemed basic at first, but as it got going, it got spooky and it became so much more than it appears originally. The characters were so unique. They were honestly fascinating. I’m not going to go into too much detail. If you liked Here There Are Monster, Wilder Girls, or small towns with spooky undertones, I highly recommend.

I really enjoyed this story a lot. The book flew by for me and I had a hard time putting it down until I was finished. In a place where supernatural powers run in most families. Grey has never found her power, but still loves spending the summers in this place that feels of home to her. This story centers around the summer she returns when her best friend has gone missing. She finds herself seeing flashes of the night she went missing, but they don’t always make sense. Grey is determined to figure out what happened to her best friend and on her journey for answers she realizes her town has more secrets it’s been hiding for a long time. Despite the danger she keeps digging into both as she is determined to understand what occurred and what is hidden. I felt like the twists were interesting and kept me interested in what was happening. I had some guesses about the end, but definitely did not know exactly what was going to happen which I love. I did feel the ending was a little rushed, but overall I really enjoyed this book.
