Synopsis
Just before summer begins, 13-year-old Ali finds an odd photograph in the attic. She knows the two children in it are her mother, Claire, and her aunt Dulcie. But whos the third person, the one whos been torn out of the picture?
Ali figures shell find out while shes vacationing in Maine with Dulcie and her four-year-old daughter, Emma, in the house where Alis mothers family used to spend summers. All hopes for relaxation are quashed shortly after their arrival, though, when the girls meet Sissy, a kid whos mean and spiteful and a bad influence on Emma.
Strangest of all, Sissy keeps talking about a girl named Teresa who drowned under mysterious circumstances back when Claire and Dulcie were kids, and whose body was never found. At first Ali thinks Sissys just trying to scare her with a ghost story, but soon she discovers the real reason why Sissy is so angry. . . . but who is the third person, the one whos been torn out of the picture? Ali will have all summer to figure it out, since shes spending the summer with her aunt and her cousin in the same house her mom and aunt used to visit when they were kids.
Then Ali meets Sissy. Sissy is mean, spiteful, and determined to ruin Alis summer. Sissy also has a secret. Could it have something to do with the old photo? Ali is dying to find out, and if shes not careful, thats exactly what might happen to her.

Mary Downing Hahn lives in Columbia, Maryland, with her husband. She has two grown daughters. Ms, Hahn was a children's librarian in Prince George's County until she decided to devote all her time to writing and visiting schools around the country. Her work ranges from realistic fiction to contemporary fantasy and has received much critical acclaim for its well-defined characterizations and interesting plot lines.
