Synopsis
Im Zuge der Dekolonisierung kamen West-Papua und seine Bewohner im Jahr 1962 ungewollt unter die Herrschaft der Republik Indonesien. Beg nstigt durch den globalen Wettbewerb um Einflusssph ren im Kalten Krieg konnte Indonesien seine nationalistischen und konomischen Interessen am Ostrand seines Territoriums ungehindert verfolgen. Seither k mpfen die Papua auf unterschiedlichen Wegen f r ihr Selbstbestimmungsrecht. Durch die erhebliche Militarisierung der Region und die Missachtung von nationalen wie internationalen politischen Abkommen geschehen in West-Papua bis heute massive Menschenrechtsverletzungen. Hierzu z hlen Einsch chterungen, Verhaftungen und Ermordungen von politischen Aktivisten oder f r Landrechte eintretende Kleinbauern. Dar ber hinaus hat das staatliche Umsiedelungsprogramm (Transmigrasi-Programm) unter Pr sident Suharto dazu gef hrt, dass die indigenen Papua heute eine Minderheit im eigenen Land geworden sind. Trotz alledem findet die Situation in West-Papua bis heute nur geringe internationale Aufmerksamkeit. Dies ist auch darin begr ndet, dass f r die westlichen Staaten die konomischen und sicherheitspolitischen Beziehungen zu Indonesien von gr erem Interesse sind als die lautstarke Thematisierung der Menschenrechtsverletzungen und die nachdr ckliche Unterst tzung der lokalen Friedensinitiativen in West-Papua.
