In this specialized biographical dictionary, over two hundred contributors, mostly military historians, have attempted to evaluate the roles of about four hundred American military men and women.... The essays average fifteen hundred words in length and all include selective bibliographies. The writing is of a uniformly high quality: scholarly, but not pedantic.... All academic and large public libraries should acquire this outstanding set.RSR

Some 200 scholars have produced essays on nearly 400 individuals important to the course of American military history. Included are not only the military, but inventors, physicians, cabinet secretaries, and Native American leaders who played an important role related to the military. The entries cover the period from the French and Indian Wars to the Vietnam War and are arranged in alphabetical order.... Each signed essay includes an appraisal of the subject and concludes with a short bibliography. The six appendixes range from a chronology of American military developments to lists of the entries arranged by birthplace, conflict, and type of service. Another unique feature is that entries are cross-referenced to other essays in the dictionary that relate to the subject under discussion. A good starting place for research on a person or period, this is highly recommended for most libraries.Library Journal
