Excerpt from Die Romantische Weltanschauung
Die Frage nach der Weltanschauung eines Dichters, die in den letzten Jahrzehnten so verpont war, ist heute wieder an der Tagesordnung. Es gilt nicht mehr, wie zu Zeiten der reinen Formastethik, als Zeichen der Unbildung, nach dem Gehalt eines Kunstwerks zu fragen. Wir treiben die Forderung der Reinheit der kunstlerischen Form nicht so weit, da die Form aus Mangel an entsprechendem Gehalt aufhort Form zu sein. Wenn es nach der Auffassung der Klassiker keinen kunstlerischen Gehalt gibt ohne Form, oder, wie Schiller das ausdruckt, der Stoff der Schonheit schlechterdings ein geformter Stoff sein mu, so finden wir, da es auch umgekehrt seine kunstlerische Form ohne Gehalt gibt; die fur sich genommen asthetisch irrelevante Form wird erst dadurch, da sie als Form eines Gehaltes erscheint, zur kunstlerischen Form.
Wir denken an das Wort des Klassikers Goethe, auf den sich die Formasthetiker so gern berufen: Zeichnen um zu zeichnen, ware wie reden um zu reden. Wenn ich nichts auszudrucken habe, wenn mich nichts anreizt, wenn ich wurdige Gegenstande erst muhsam auffuchen mu, wo soll da der Nachahmungstrieb herkommen. Und wir glauben nicht die Sphare der Kunst zu uberschreiten, wenn wir den Gehalt erforschen, den auszudrucken es den Kunstler anreizt.
