Rin S.: Five Book Friday: Autism and Neurodiversity Acceptance (0 comment)
One of my favorite parts of working at a bookstore is connecting customers to books they may not find otherwise. Autism and neurodiverse research and literature has come a long way in recent years, and I'm so happy to be able to make these connections...

Publisher Comments

Meeting a new dog is exciting, but it can also be scary. This humorous how-to manual shows kids the best ways to interact with unfamiliar dogs, providing helpful tips about all sorts of dog behavior. Children often dont understand what dogs actions mean and can misinterpret a threatening signal for a friendly one and vice versa. Kids and parents will return to Wendy Wahmans playful illustrations again and again for useful reminders: Slow Down. Stay very still. And remember, dont lick the dog!

Review

"Eye-popping colors and exaggerated shapes....stylized dogs with swirling lines, curly fur....[R]hyming text on each spread offer[s] simple tips for getting along with unfamiliar dogs....provides a jazzy, unusual introduction to the subject for children who don't have dogs of their own." Kirkus

About the Author

Wendy Wahman lives in Washington State with big poodles, old cats, and a husband named Joe. She’s won many awards for illustration, but her greatest joy is loving the two-, three-, and four-legged animals she has known. This is her first children’s book.

This is a book for people who don’t know how to treat dogs. It probably was written for children, but adults can enjoy and appreciate this book as well. Like humans, dogs have personalities. This book educates us that the dog isn’t just a dog but could be “Molly,” “Chico,” “Chewbbie,” or “Jazz.” The beautiful illustration with full of colors draws our attention to the messages. As the author is a professional illustrator, the illustration is not just to make the book look appealing. The illustration itself is the message. If you love dogs and your new born is introduced to your family; if your dogs are afraid of your neighboring children; if you don’t know how to deal with dogs, this book is for you, for your family, and for your friends.
