Jinwoo Chong: Clock In: Jinwoo Chong’s Playlist for 'Flux' (0 comment)
I had my first inklings of the novel that eventually became Flux about a year after I was laid off from my first job after college, the result of a corporate takeover of my company that eliminated my entire department. While a tough hurdle to overcome at twenty-one years old, I learned a lot about self-sufficiency....

Publisher Comments

A bittersweet tale of love and longing from the bestselling author of Last Night at the Lobster.

Once again making the ordinary and overlooked not merely visible but vital to understanding our own lives, Stewart O'Nan confirms his position as an American master with Emily, Alone. A sequel to the bestselling, much-beloved Wish You Were Here, O'Nan's intimate novel follows Emily Maxwell, a widow whose grown children have long departed. She dreams of visits from her grandchildren while mourning the turnover of her quiet Pittsburgh neighborhood. When her sister-in-law and sole companion, Arlene, faints at their favorite breakfast buffet, Emily's life changes in unexpected ways. As she grapples with her new independence, she discovers a hidden strength and realizes that life always offers new possibilities.

Review

"This exquisite novel plumbs an interior landscape rarely explored in literature — that of a sharp 80-year-old American woman watching the contours of her quiet life grow ever narrower. Emily Maxwell, introduced in O'Nan's Wish You Were Here (2003), is a compellingly old-fashioned character — wry, unsentimental, resourceful, self-critical and stalwart, even as her life fills with loss." Macleans

A beauty of a book. The detail of an ordinary life so perfectly portrayed honestly took my breath away. You find yourself caring deeply for this immediately recognizable woman and prompted me to look at the everyday details of life in a new way. What more can one ask of a book?
