Synopses & Reviews
Most artists try their hands at erotic work. The results are often drawings, modest and intimate in format, that tend to be kept in private collections.
Often the artists themselves prefer not to release their erotic work. At a later date, their estates or collectors frequently decide against publication. To
this day it remains difficult to locate and reproduce explicit erotic art.
The works in this anthology have been selected by purely subjective criteria. Everyone has personal preferences that result from experience rather than
social convention. The editors, bearing this fact in mind, have allowed the siren powers of erotic art to seduce them, and have aimed to showcase the sensual impact and associations of artwork, in the knowledge that their point of view may not necessarily coincide with the artist's.
The art in this book, created by major 20th-century artists, represents a broad range of different approaches to eroticism from the manic obsessions of Hans Bellmer and the floral sublimations of Georgia O'Keeffe to the surreal reveries of Andre Masson or the orgiastic work of Hermann Nitsch. The strategies adopted on 20th-century erotic art are as many and various as those in other forms of art. And what counts, in the end, is how it is seen.
