Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

This book recounts a unique mountain climbing experience, the first successful summiting of Mt. Everest by way of the West Ridge, largely the result of perseverance bolstered by experience and careful planning. For additional insight into how perspective can be enriched through the years, I recommend also a much more recent essay by Dr. Hornbein in the book entitled Open Spaces: Voices from the Northwest. The essay is a wise and poignant expression of the nature of risk in many phases of life including Dr. Hornbein's observations on medicine, society, and the recent explosion in the number of the inexperienced seeking guided trips up Everest, the most tragic of which is chronicled in Jon Krakauer's book entitled Into Thin Air.
