Powell's Staff: Best Books of 2023: Fiction (0 comment)
2023 was such a great year for fiction! We had the hardest time narrowing down our list of the best fiction books of the year, but after much debate, we settled on these 23 (an appropriate number for 2023, we decided). The books on this list take place in Hawaii, Argentina, the Hamptons, a Palace in the desert, and a land of milk and honey...

Diana Gabaldon’s brilliant storytelling has captivated millions of readers in her bestselling and award-winning Outlander saga. Now, in her first-ever graphic novel, Gabaldon gives readers a fresh look at the events of the original Outlander: Jamie Fraser’s side of the story, gorgeously rendered by artist Hoang Nguyen.

After too long an absence, Jamie Fraser is coming home to Scotland—but not without great trepidation. Though his beloved godfather, Murtagh, promised Jamie’s late parents he’d watch over their brash son, making good on that vow will be no easy task. There’s already a fat bounty on the young exile’s head, courtesy of Captain Black Jack Randall, the sadistic British officer who’s crossed paths—and swords—with Jamie in the past. And in the court of the mighty MacKenzie clan, Jamie is a pawn in the power struggle between his uncles: aging chieftain Colum, who demands his nephew’s loyalty—or his life—and Dougal, war chieftain of Clan MacKenzie, who’d sooner see Jamie put to the sword than anointed Colum’s heir.

And then there is Claire Randall—mysterious, beautiful, and strong-willed, who appears in Jamie’s life to stir his  compassion . . . and arouse his desire.

But even as Jamie’s heart draws him to Claire, Murtagh is certain she’s been sent by the Old Ones, and Captain Randall accuses her of being a spy. Claire clearly has something to hide, though Jamie can’t believe she could pose him any danger. Still, he knows she is torn between two choices—a life with him, and whatever it is that draws her thoughts so often elsewhere.

Step into the captivating, passionate, and suspenseful world of The Exile, and experience the storytelling magic of Diana Gabaldon as never before.

This is a must have for any fans of Outlander! Gabaldon reveals several huge new pieces of information that we've never known before, including a new character. Nguyen did a great job with the character design, especially Jamie. There are some breathtaking illustrations that I could just stare at all day. It's a fantastic addition to anyone who read and loved Outlander.

Well, the novel dosn't come out till September, so I guess I'll give a review of it then. I'd like to say that Diana Gabaldon is a very creative author, to weave a story around so much history is nothing short of amazing! Her characters are colorful. They seem alive, they are loved, or hated, and we readers, well, we become attached. We read and re-read the books, catching things we didn't when we first read them. Getting to know the characters like they are family. I have all the CD's and have listened to them over and over again, waiting for the new book. I have added many fans to her books too... I borrow out my treasured copies or CD's to friends that want a new story. Even bring the CD's on a vacation with my husband got him wanting to read and listen to the other books. Thats the thing, it's been years and still her story is going. It's alive, we await the next volume of history. I can't wait to read the graphic novel... Yes, it probably isn't any where near as good as the book, but isn't that the way of it. When words are written your imagination imprints a glimpse of each character, of each landmark. You can't improve on an excellently told story from a great storyteller. All you can do is try to paint the picture she created in each readers heart... I await the novel and the movies.... I would like to see the Outlander Series made into many mini-series. Like two or three movies per book... I'd like to see someone do the movies that loved the books, not just read them but really loved them.

I'm not sure how to rate a product that hasn't been released yet, but I can say that I am so excited for it to come out! I love Diana Gabaldon and I love the Outlander books. Looking forward to Exile.
