This exquisite collection of linked short stories is constantly surprising. Each of the spirited central characters is a fish out of water, floundering in a world where they feel they don’t belong - - an American living in Japan, a Japanese living in America, and in the final heartbreaking piece, a bereaved father ill at ease anywhere in the land of the living. The vivid settings are seen through the eyes of these newbies, giving us a fresh glimpse of places both foreign and familiar. (One very familiar setting is Powells Books!) And these stories are so full of pain and humor that, as a reader, I was swept away by the humble humanity of this gifted storyteller. I think you’ll relish Marian Pierce’s Finding Land.
