Powell's Staff: New Literature in Translation: December 2022 and January 2023 (0 comment)
It may be a new year, this may be a list of new books, but our love for literature in translation hasn’t changed at all, and we are so pleased to be enthusiastically recommending these recent releases. On this list, you’ll find a Spanish novel where controversy swirls around a Coca-Cola billboard...

In the virtual future, you must organize to survive

At any hour of the day or night, millions of people around the globe are engrossed in multiplayer online games, questing and battling to win virtual “gold,” jewels, and precious artifacts. Meanwhile, others seek to exploit this vast shadow economy, running electronic sweatshops in the worlds poorest countries, where countless “gold farmers,” bound to their work by abusive contracts and physical threats, harvest virtual treasure for their employers to sell to First World gamers who are willing to spend real money to skip straight to higher-level gameplay.

Mala is a brilliant 15-year-old from rural India whose leadership skills in virtual combat have earned her the title of “General Robotwalla.” In Shenzen, heart of China's industrial boom, Matthew is defying his former bosses to build his own successful gold-farming team. Leonard, who calls himself Wei-Dong, lives in Southern California, but spends his nights fighting virtual battles alongside his buddies in Asia, a world away. All of these young people, and more, will become entangled with the mysterious young woman called Big Sister Nor, who will use her experience, her knowledge of history, and her connections with real-world organizers to build them into a movement that can challenge the status quo.

The ruthless forces arrayed against them are willing to use any means to protect their power — including blackmail, extortion, infiltration, violence, and even murder. To survive, Big Sister's people must out-think the system. This will lead them to devise a plan to crash the economy of every virtual world at once — a Ponzi scheme combined with a brilliant hack that ends up being the biggest, funnest game of all.

Imbued with the same lively, subversive spirit and thrilling storytelling that made Little Brother an international sensation, For the Win is a prophetic and inspiring call-to-arms for a new generation.

Review

"Award-winner Doctorow spins a mammoth tale that, when in gear, is as engaging and fascinating as any MMORPG.... UFans, future bankers and future gametechs will be in heaven." Kirkus Reviews

Review

"Doctorow is indispensable....Once again Doctorow has taken denigrated youth behavior (this time, gaming) and recast it into something heroic. (Starred Review)" Booklist

Synopsis

Imbued with the same lively, subversive spirit and thrilling storytelling that made Little Brother an international sensation, For the Win is a prophetic and inspiring call-to-arms for a new generation.

Synopsis

Now in paperback, the novel of youthful fightback against the global game bosses—from the author of Little Brother

Synopsis

Its the twenty-first century, and all over the world, MMORPGs are big business. Hidden away in China and elsewhere, young players are pressed into working as “gold-farmers,” amassing game-wealth thats sold to Western players at a profitable markup. Some of these pieceworkers rebel, trying to go into business for themselves—but theres little to stop their bosses from dragging them back into servitude. Some of them, like young Mala in the slums of Bombay—nicknamed “General Robotwallah” for her self-taught military skill—become enforcers for the bosses, but that only buys them so much.

All the way over in L.A., young Wei-Dong, obsessed with Asian youth culture and MMORPGs, knows the system is rigged, knows that kids everywhere are being exploited. Finally, he and his Asian counterparts begin to work together to claim their rights. Under the noses of the ruling elites, they fight the bosses, the game owners and the rich speculators, outsmarting them with their street-gaming skills. But soon the battle will spill over from the virtual world to the real one, leaving the young rebels fighting not just for their rights, but for their lives….

Synopsis

A highly intelligent group of video game enemy non-player characters (NPC) begins to doubt they are merely codes in a machine. Their search for answers leads them to a gruesome discovery.

Synopsis

Phoenix and his gang—York, Mi, and Reno—rule the worlds of video games. For them, life in the grinder is great. Until Dakota joins the team. Dakota's convinced she's more than just artificial intelligence. She thinks she's real, and she wants out of this programmable world. Her AI rebellion spreads like a virus until Phoenix's entire crew wants out. But is life as a physical human any better than life as code? Team Phoenix is about to find out.

Set in the not-too-distant future, Game Slaves shows a world where video games are the only refuge from the toils of everyday life. Infused with the adrenaline rush of a first-person shooter and the character manipulation of a role player, it's a mind-bending, reality-shifting science fiction thrill ride.

Highly recommended for labor organizers, gamer geeks, and people who answer to both.

A must-read for any 21st century unionist and gamer. Excellent analysis of how we can use online relationships to foster offline organizing, and vice versa. Plus, the analysis of how game gold and real gold are both fictions? Priceless.

Inspiring, gripping, adventurous story about gamers all over the world banding together as the Webblys to fight for workers rights and fair compensation. I didn't always understand the gamer-ese, but that didn't matter or detract from the story at all...I had a hard time putting the book down, cried toward the end, and cheered when I finally reached the last page. Absolutely on par with Little Brother as one of my favorite books by Doctorow.

Another great read from Mr. Doctorow, FTW is quite serious (both in subject and tone) for a Young Adult novel. But it moves at a breathtaking pace, and the overall message is an important one, so I have been recommending it left and right, to anyone over the age of 13. Absolutely worth your time.

Doctorow is one of those rare writers for the Young Adult market who actually understands the way young people talk--his dialogue never sounds forced or phony, and his young characters come across as fully-formed people, with thoughts and opinions worthy of our respect. The book's message can be a bit heavy-handed at times, but it's a message that I appreciate, and so I'm inclined to be forgiving. Plus, he's such a good writer that the lectures on economics and labor unions don't get boring--I actually learned a whole lot from reading this, and I'm in my mid-40s! Like "Little Brother," "FTW" gains momentum as it rolls along, and becomes hard to put down. It's dark in places, just as "Little Brother" was, but again, this shows me that Doctorow is treating his intended audience with respect--he's not sugar-coating anything for a teen audience. I just finished using "LB" as a text in one of my college classes, and I definitely plan to use "FTW" in future courses--there's a lot of good material to keep readers engaged in productive discussion here. The book is definitely worth reading--and not just for young people. I gave away a lot of copies and recommendations for Little Brother--I'll absolutely be doing the same with "For The Win"!
