Here's the mission, should you choose to accept it: Go to the travel section of the nearest bookstore and see if you can find the family travel books. City-goers will find the Fun Places to Go with Children series from Chronicle Books extremely useful. For example, the Colorado volume provides information on everything from where to fly a model airplane in Denver to National Earthquake Information Center to kid-friendly restaurant in Steamboat Springs.

Cripple Creek used to be a mining town. It still is, though the ore these days is extracted in the casinos rather than from the ground. This book doesn't mind telling you that the casinos in this Colorado town are loud and crowded and may not have a place for kids. Its authors tell you what you can expect if you decide to tour the Molly Kathleen, a real, if former, gold mine. They've covered the state region by region, town by town, focusing on specific places (such as Doc Holliday's grave in Glenwood Springs) and activities (such as dog-sledding in Snowmass) each with descriptions, contact information, and age recommendations.
