The new novel from Nobel laureate Toni Morrison.

Spare and unsparing, God Help the Child is a searing tale about the way childhood trauma shapes and misshapes the life of the adult. At the center: a woman who calls herself Bride, whose stunning blue-black skin is only one element of her beauty, her boldness and confidence, her success in life; but which caused her light-skinned mother to deny her even the simplest forms of love until she told a lie that ruined the life of an innocent woman, a lie whose reverberations refuse to diminish... Booker, the man Bride loves and loses, whose core of anger was born in the wake of the childhood murder of his beloved brother... Rain, the mysterious white child, who finds in Bride the only person she can talk to about the abuse she's suffered at the hands of her prostitute mother... and Sweetness, Bride's mother, who takes a lifetime to understand that "what you do to children matters. And they might never forget."

Review

"Toni Morrison is one of the gods who walk among us. A righteous, fearless teller of necessary truths...sensually written and commanding." Elissa Schappell, Vanity Fair

Review

"It is a beautiful thing to watch Morrison move characters through the full range of human emotion and into cathartic transformation. Here, Morrison shows us the importance of not holding on to what needs to be put down; the necessity of forgiveness, the necessity of beginning again." Hope Wabuke, The Root

Review

"Nobel laureate Morrison continues to add to her canon of eloquent, brilliantly conceived novels defining the crises and cultural shifts of our times....Yet another finely distilled masterpiece." Jane Ciabattari, BBC

Review

"Powerful portraits in lean prose....The pieces all fit together seamlessly in a story about beating back the past, confronting the present, and understanding one's worth." Barbara Hoffert, Library Journal, (starred review)

Review

"Sly, savage, honest, and elegant....Morrison spikes elements of realism and hyperrealism with magic and mayhem, while sustaining a sexily poetic and intoxicating narrative atmosphere....Once again, Morrison thrillingly brings the storytelling moxie and mojo that make her, arguably, our greatest living novelist." Lisa Shea, ELLE Magazine

Review

"A chilling oracle and a lively storyteller, Nobel winner Morrison continues the work she began 45 years ago with The Bluest Eye." Kirkus (Starred Review)

Review

"Another dazzler from Nobel laureate Morrison." Barbara Hoffert's Fiction Picks, Library Journal

Review

"Emotionally-wrenching...[Morrison's] literary craftsmanship endures with sparse language, precise imagery, and even humor. This haunting novel displays a profound understanding of American culture and an unwavering sense of justice and forgiveness." Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

This book was not as good as I was anticipating. I think I always have trouble not comparing her finer work with other books she has written. This was a short book, yet not a page turner. I got the premise of the way you treat a child when it is young is crucial to their self-esteem as an adult. The relationship between mother and daughter is important. Then a romantic aspect of the story was predictable of a Toni Morrison book. And the company she worked for was unbelievable. I just didn't like this book. Doesn't mean a Toni Morrison fan would not like it.

There really is no stopping Toni Morrison; a true literary genius, someone our generation should seek out in an effort to better understand the human experience. This novel, which centers around the cycles of abuses children endure, which permeate all other realms of their lives as they grow and develop, is a testament to the power of learned conditions, and the power of agency in one's own aging experience. Morrison delivers characters so matter-of-fact, so real, that one cannot help but identify with them on levels not forced, and not easily forgettable. The main character (though many of the characters shared a relatively similar amount of backdrop characterization,) Bride, comes to terms with very deep and moving life experiences in an authentic way, and upon reading her story, I felt touched by her perseverance and achievements, while all the while questioning the ways in which I myself have been shaped by the decisions of my parents.

"God Help The Child" is an interesting love story. The book talks about Sweetness' love for her daughter Bride - a love which does not show itself; a love which is strict and stern to enable Bride to survive as a Black woman in this racist world. Unfortunately, Bride does not understand this as a child. Descriptions of pedophilia seem unnecessary but are part of the plot. The novel is just the right size to be enthralling and satisfying. I loved it.

Toni Morrison delves into and gives the reader a very good picture and analysis of how the life of a child can shape the life of the adult, for good or bad. A good read.

"Memory is the worst thing about healing" Toni Morrison wastes no words in this brief but searing novel about the impact of childhood trauma on the adults who live through and with it. As in all her books, she writes of tragedy, love, racism, abuse, and human fraility with succinct but lyrical language. I wanted to read this book longer than it took, so I read slowly, parsing the chapters to last over the seven days of a week. A second reading will be done in one sitting.

Sheryl McLean-Houle , April 01, 2015 (view all comments by Sheryl McLean-Houle)
God Help the Children is Toni Morrison's latest novel and her first set in contemporary time. The story moves between 1st and 3rd person narratives even for the same characters and on a re-read I'll analyze that further. It stands to Morrison's talent that it wasn't something that stood out - it was only on looking back for the review that I realized that sometime Bride - the protagonist- was told in 1st, then in other parts 3rd. The language is typical Morrison - sparse but powerfully descriptive - a dichotomy that has always been part of what I love about her writing. The characters, despite the limited space for development, are fully realized. Their stories and pasts are hard, and there is a common thread from the past that connects them. There is a painful, emotional distance that drives choices throughout. Overall, an excellent read with my only real complaint is that I wanted more time with the characters. This latest Morrison novel is not as dark as some of her other ones, but it tackles typical themes of loss and the impact of adults' behaviors on someone's youth and on the adults one becomes. I'm sure, like all of my experiences with Morrison's novels, I'll discover more in subsequent readings, which is yet another reason to enjoy her brilliance. Note: Read an ARC from the publisher.

Reading the highlights of the book appears to be a genuine point to "childhood" unresolved issues. I believe that children never forget what they encounter.
