The quick-witted humor of Terry Pratchett, driven by the nonsense of the mundane, collides seamlessly with the picturesque darkness of Neil Gaiman, where the mundane reveals itself to be secretly fantastic, in this modern comedic fantasy about a demon, an angel, and the antichrist — who is an 11-year-old boy named Adam — and his loyal hellhound, Dog. Publisher Comments

According to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch (the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655, before she exploded), the world will end on a Saturday. Next Saturday, in fact. Just before dinner.

So the armies of Good and Evil are amassing, Atlantis is rising, frogs are falling, tempers are flaring. Everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon—both of whom have lived amongst Earth's mortals since The Beginning and have grown rather fond of the lifestyle—are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture.

And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist . . .

Synopsis

We hear the world will end on a Saturday. Next Saturday, in fact. Just before dinner.

Unfortunately, Sister Mary Loquacious of the Chattering Order has misplaced the Antichrist. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse ride motorcycles. And the representatives from Heaven and Hell have decided they actually like the human race...

About the Author

For those who really need to know, Terry Pratchett was born in Buckinghamshire, England, in 1948. He has managed to avoid all the really interesting jobs authors take in order to look good in this kind of biography. In his search for a quiet life he got a job as a Press Officer with the Central Electricity Generating Board just after Three Mile Island, which shows his unerring sense of timing. Now a full-time writer, he lives in Somerset with his wife and daughter. He likes people to buy him banana daiquiris (he knows people don't read author biographies, but feels this might be worth a try).

Neil Gaiman used to be a journalist, but gave it all up to write comics, which he claims are a totally valid late-twentieth-century art form, and he's even won awards for them, so that's all right. He's 5'11" tall, owns a number of black T-shirts, and although he's not overly keen on banana daiquiris, is always very flattered when appreciative fans send him money (he's read Terry Pratchett's biography, and, although he doubts that this will have any effect, figures what the hell).

The works of both authors are nothing but a collection of the infamous "god in the machine" narratives. Just when the plot gets complicated, some supernatural character ("god") will be inserted to resolve the issue. J. R. R. Tolkien once concedes that the "great eagles" is a plot device he deploys several times to rescue the travellers whenever the situation gets tricky. It is a source of wonder that the general reading public continues to forgive the two comical writers and buy their books.

This book is literally the best. It is clever while also being hilarious and dark with an interesting plotline. One of those books you read multiple times because it's just so good.

This is such a fun and light-hearted story about the end of the world and how human folly can ruin the plans of God and the Devil. Pratchett and Gaiman compliment each other very well to create one, coherent story about how the nurture of the WRONG spawn of the devil makes the end of the world less finite than either God or the Devil would like. Lots of fun with a more memorable story than most Pratchett books I've read.

"By Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett," the listing should read. A delicious introduction to the other author, if you are only a fan of the one. The most important thing to know about the book is that the attitude is benign, positive. Finish reading it and you feel better about the world; if you've identified with the protagonist, you feel better about yourself as well.

This is one of the best works of humorous fiction I've ever read. The humor is intelligent without being inaccessible. Almost everyone knows the basic premise of the Biblical end of the world - but no one has seen it from this angle before. Very well written by two of the world's top authors or our time. I bought this book originally because I was a fan of Neil Gaiman's Sandman and Neverwhere. I'd never even heard of Terry Pratchett. Within minutes of starting I was laughing so hard that my mom stole the book from me to read it herself. We have now both given this book as a gift multiple times and we're completely hooked on Pratchett's other works as well.

Probably the only book that I have had to buy a new copy of because mine has worn out from the repeated readings; either by me or random people I force to read it. Hilarious doesn't begin to describe this book. Definitely a must read for anyone, but especially people who love British humour.

This is the best book I've ever read. It's insightful, silly, funny, poignant, and surprisingly uplifting, with wonderful satire featuring the dry wit of two fantastic authors. I have to keep buying it because I can't seem to stop giving my copies to friends for them to read!

I have read this book five or six times so far and given away copies of it to friends. My children have each purchased multiple copies of Good Omens, and my book club read it. This book has everything - heroes, heroines, entertaining minor characters, parallels to history, mythology, and theology, and finally Armageddon deterred. Introduced to these authors by this marvelous book, I've gone on to read all of Terry Pratchett (torn between Wee Free Men and Night Watch as his best book) and most of Neil Gaiman (I love his books for children and find his novels haunting and worthwhile).

Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett subscribe to the notion one should not blame malice for that which can be explained by stupidity and/or incompetence. The Apocalypse is right on schedule until ALL the players have a hand in the game. Good and Evil are playing by rules they don't really understand and humanity wends its merry way toward whatever fate awaits it. Funny beyond words as well as thought provoking.

This book had me laughing all the way through. You have to love it when the Apocalypse isn't going according to plan. Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett make for a perfect team, and their combined wit is razor sharp.

I laughed out loud through the first third of the book. After that either I or the book settled down to a mellower humor. I bought the book because--Gaiman _and_ Pratchett?! I figured it had to be good--and it was. In addition to brilliant writing, another fully-"drawn" world and characters, and hilarity, the book also has, ultimately, a good-hearted center that holds it all together.
