Powell's Staff: New Literature in Translation: June 2022 (0 comment)
June is one of my favorite months, especially here in Portland, where the weather can be beautiful and sunny one minute and a gray downpour with threats of thunder the next. It’s important to always be prepared to take advantage of those rainy afternoons, with a good mug of tea and a great book. Below, we’ve rounded up some of the books in translation released this past month....

The exemplary novel of the Jazz Age, F. Scott Fitzgerald's third book, The Great Gatsby (1925), stands as the supreme achievement of his career. T. S. Eliot read it three times and saw it as the "first step" American fiction had taken since Henry James; H. L. Mencken praised "the charm and beauty of the writing," as well as Fitzgerald's sharp social sense; and Thomas Wolfe hailed it as Fitzgerald's "best work" thus far. The story of the fabulously wealthy Jay Gatsby and his love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan, of lavish parties on Long Island at a time when, The New York Times remarked, "gin was the national drink and sex the national obsession," it is an exquisitely crafted tale of America in the 1920s that resonates with the power of myth. A novel of lyrical beauty yet brutal realism, of magic, romance, and mysticism, The Great Gatsby is one of the great classics of twentieth-century literature.

This is the definitive, textually accurate edition of The Great Gatsby, edited by Matthew J. Bruccoli and authorized by the estate of F. Scott Fitzgerald. The first edition of The Great Gatsby contained many errors resulting from Fitzgerald's extensive revisions and a rushed production schedule, and subsequent editions introduced further departures from the author's intentions. This critical edition draws on the manuscript and surviving proofs of the novel, along with Fitzgerald's later revisions and corrections, to restore the text to its original form. It is The Great Gatsby as Fitzgerald intended it.

Review

James Dickey Now we have an American masterpiece in its final form: the original crystal has shaped itself into the true diamond. This is the novel as Fitzgerald wished it to be, and so it is what we have dreamed of, sleeping and waking

Originally, I was forced to read this book for IB Lit, but a few chapters in, it no longer became a "forced book" to read. This book, much different than Buhrmann's film adaptation, is a brilliant piece full of symbolism, romance, and classic "roaring twenties".

Before you see Baz Luhrmann's version of razzle dazzle--3D'd and Jay Z'd--read the original. Fitzgerald's distinctive prose, a wandering romance, the threats to morality from NY money, more and more. The precursor to so many later novels of note, recently O'Neill's Netherland.

It both makes me extremely happy and extremely disturbed that I can get literary art like this for less than it costs for a Big Mac.

In my younger and more judgmental years, I read The Great Gatsby with disappointed indifference. I thought Fitzgerald was a fanciful hack, that the story was weak and the writing was too bourgeois. A few days ago, I found a dog eared copy of the book in a stack that my friend had left behind, and curiously began reading again. This time was markedly different. Reading through the illuminating prose, I often found myself beating on the wall and jumping up and down in jealousy and amazement at just how good Fitzgerald writes. This is a brilliant work, and all too deserving of the spot that it currently holds in the American/Western canon.

This is a great classic I am happy to have it as a required text. Though I was a bit surprised as to its date of print.

F. Scott Fitzgerald succeeded in writing a novel that not only survived years of others, but also achieved a novel that is believable. The characters step out from the pages as living and breathing individuals. Each action and reaction is realistic and we feel for these characters when they face hardship and chastise them when doing something stupid. You step into a world of wonderful parties and relentless social order, a world after war and set in the roaring 20's. Follow Gatsby in his quest for truth and honestly in a world of masks and facades, and in turn find something for your own. A wonderful read for anyone it is something to experience at least once in your life if not several times!

The book that stopped me from dreading English III; F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel “The Great Gatsby,” is about the misgivings that people who want money have about people who have money. Gatsby is a retired war vet who has a burning desire to impress Daisy, a wealthy woman who lives across the bay and has never needed to work a day in her life. The novel is from the perspective of Nick, Daisy’s cousin, who is new to the city. Nick observes Gatsby’s attempts to impress Daisy and prove he has lots of money by throwing lavish parties.

A Favorite: THE GREAT GATSBY by F. Scott Fitzgerald is considered one of the best novels of the 20th century, primarily because it is. If you haven't read it, read it.

What amazes me most about The Great Gatsby is how timeless it is. When I read it, I was prepared for a story steeped in Art Deco, flappers, prohibition, etc. but instead I read a book that could have been written yesterday. The characters in The Great Gatsby are amazing and the story is one with which we can all connect in one way or another. Really, folks, this may be the greatest American novel. Give it a shot. It's very short so you have only an evening or two to lose.

The 1920s were roaring with excitement, and this book captures it. Fitzgerald has a writing style that is captivating. Nick Carraway moves to New York from Minnesota, and lives next door to a man named Gatsby who has the most lavish parties. As I was reading this, I wished I could have attended one of these parties with the socialites of New York in the 1920s! Gatsby is in love with another man's wife, Daisy, and enlists Nick's help in arranging meetings, but the fun ends when Daisy's husband begins to realize she's having an affair!
