Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments

From the internationally acclaimed author of Blankets ("A triumph for the genre." —Library Journal), a highly anticipated new graphic novel.

Sprawling across an epic landscape of deserts, harems, and modern industrial clutter, Habibi tells the tale of Dodola and Zam, refugee child slaves bound to each other by chance, by circumstance, and by the love that grows between them. We follow them as their lives unfold together and apart; as they struggle to make a place for themselves in a world (not unlike our own) fueled by fear, lust, and greed; and as they discover the extraordinary depth — and frailty — of their connection.

At once contemporary and timeless, Habibi gives us a love story of astounding resonance: a parable about our relationship to the natural world, the cultural divide between the first and third worlds, the common heritage of Christianity and Islam, and, most potently, the magic of storytelling.

Review

"A dense, swirling dervish of a tale…this will be the most talked about graphic novel of the fall." Publisher Weekly

Review

"The character depth, plot complexity, and storytelling in this lyrical, sexual, and scholarly epic would make any novelist proud...Thompson strings compositions that are often more tapestry than comics and that balance graphic design, illumination, calligraphy, and cartooning in steady alignment. It is unfair to expect two masterpieces in a row from anyone, but here Thompson sits securely in that rarefied air." Booklist (Starred Review)

Review

"Habibi lifts the bar of graphic storytelling to new heights, both by the intricate, dramatic density and breathtaking scholarship of Thompson’s panels and by the sheer scale and decorative beauty of his flowing, roiling, protean style. Thompson is the Charles Dickens of the genre, able to capture all the scary, heartbreaking, brave, uplifting details of his characters’ fates while orchestrating the big-picture machinations that connect them to the lives and times of his readers...Habibi is a masterpiece that surely is one of a kind." Elle Magazine

Review

"A graphic novel that is sure to attract attention...A mature—in all its meanings—glimpse into a world few Westerners are at home with, and Thompson is respectful throughout." Kirkus

Review

"Exquisite...Habibi is a remarkable feat of research, care, and black ink, and a reminder that all 'People of the book,' despite the division of their individual traditions, share a mosaic of stories." Harper's Magazine

Review

"Habibi has classic written all over it. It’s a modern literary triumph, a book so broad and magical in its scope, only a master could pull it off. This is no ordinary comic, it is a complete work of art. Beautiful, thought provoking, both timeless and of its time...An awe-inspiring read you can’t afford to miss." Grovel

Review

"Easily the best graphic novel of the year, and probably the decade...Thompson’s line work here is beyond brilliant, combining myriad styles and capturing the rich historical legacy of the cultural and religious volumes that inspired it. This is a work that truly changes the game and sets a new standard for all the graphic novels that follow it." GraphicNovelReporter.com

Review

"Craig Thompson's new graphic novel, Habibi, is a masterpiece. This isn't an opinion. This book is a gorgeous object; to make it, Thompson apparently covered himself in honey and rolled around in a thousand years of Arabic calligraphy and Islamic art, and the result is breathtaking." The Boston Phoenix

Review

"Erotic, grotesque, and profoundly moving...I don’t think I’ve ever read a book quite like this, and I expect I’ll be thinking about it for a long, long time." Boing Boing

Just picked up this beautiful book, used. It's well worth it at full price, but a steal to find a nice used copy. I've flipped through it before but never had a chance to sit down and read through the whole thing. While technically a present for my boyfriend, I'm excited to read this when he's done. The layout and art are beautiful so far; Craig Thompson is amazing.

Portland-based graphic novelist Craig Thompson's massive, sprawling and ambitious follow up to his excellent "Blankets" is a very different experience than his last effort. Set in the Middle East, it tells the story of the relationship and lives of two slaves. Drawing on the Arabian Nights, history, Islam and Arabic calligraphy, it's a beautifully drawn, immersive experience that can be a little exhausting (it runs nearly 700 pages). Some have criticized it for indulging in racial stereotypes, but I think that's a rather shallow criticism for people who are just looking to be self-righteous.

"His attention to detail is astonishing. His devotion to latching onto and exploiting metaphor to the nth degree is simultaneously inspiring and exhausting. Unfortunately, his reliance on stereotype and cliché undermines his work as much as it did Eisner’s. Because for all of Eisner’s structural brilliance and ambition, his characters talked liked over-the-top stage characters. Racial, sexual, and ethnic stereotypes abounded in his stories. In Habibi, the reader is presented with dark-skinned African characters who talk in quasi-American slang. The way Thompson depicts cross-dressing eunuchs shows a fairly startling lack of understanding of transgendered issues today, something that comes into play because of the modern tone of their dialogue. His idea of comic relief is a dwarf who farts when he’s nervous. The average Arabic man is depicted as a rapacious, untrustworthy monster." - rob clough the comics journal

Beautifully drawn and designed, gorgeously interwoven with Quran stories and Arabic calligraphy. The story is brutal in places, but ultimately, I thought, redemptive and beautiful. Unlike many stories I read or hear, it interrogates the brutality to women it depicts and tries to balance female self-sacrifice and understand it. The themes are beautifully woven into the narrative and the art both -- and there is really no difference between art and story, here. I think it will reward rereading.

Simply gorgeous. Thompson is one of a handful of graphic "novelists" who produce works that bear comparison with the great writers.

Fantastic beyond description -- a heartbreaking modern tale of childhood lost and the cost of survival. Contains an amazing number of elements, from the significance of Arab letters and mathematics, to environmental degradation in desert communities; but most of all, a story of hope and friendship surviving humanity's worst assaults upon its children. Terrific illustations to match a complex storyline.

Most of a decade in the making, Craig Thompson's Habibi proves worth the wait. An incredible love story wrapped within a woman's journey from various kinds of entrapment and servitude, presented in beautiful, lush images. Simply stunning, and worthy of all the notice it's garnered...and more.

Astounding and gorgeous and heartbreaking all at once. This is incredibly rich and layered: religion and storytelling and the arabic language and sex and lust and eunuchs . . . I could go on and on about how much is packed in here and how he weaves it all together, beautifully.

Drawing from both Christian and Islamic traditions to offer one of the most touching love stories that I have ever read. Craig Thompson, through his beautiful prose and illustrations, is able to imbue the characters with a depth and understanding that transcends traditional love stories and challenges the reader to discover those things deep inside of us that we all hold dear.

Not only the best graphic novel of the year, but one of the best graphic novels ever. Not since Asterios Polyp has the marriage of word and line come together so beautifully and with so much depth.

For many years I have been highly anticipating the release of Craig Thompson's newest work, Habibi. I know that my review won't carry as much weight as that of Time, NPR, The New York Times Book Review, etc.... but I can add another voice to the sea of adulation. Each panel is lovingly crafted with phenomenal intention. You could take away every word and still have a intelligible, beautiful story. However, the melding of art and text is profound and unforgettable. Habibi is a love story that is honest and so real that the seemingly intimidating 672 pages melt away and you are left wanting more. The hardcover itself is a beautiful. The cover has gold foil, spotgloss, and impressive binding. I can not recommend Habibi or any of Thompson's work enough.

I'm a huge fan of Craig and can't wait to meet him. Also, the synopsis says "Habibi explores our relationship to the natural world, the cultural divide between first and third worlds." Many people find the term 'first world' and 'third world' offensive when applied to nations, invoking an outdated sense of history and colonialism. And knowing is half the battle.
