Kelsey Ford: Celebrate Short Story Month: 7 Recommendations Based on 7 Collections We Love (0 comment)
I love short story collections because of how much they manage to do with so little. They can dilate, expand, shatter, constellate. Within any given collection, you can move from the moon to a diner after midnight to that liminal minute right when you wake up but are still knee-deep in a dream..

Together We'll Light Up the Night!

Hanabi is the 2013 Essen Spiel des Jahres winner, where players work cooperatively to launch a spectacular firework display. Trouble is, it's dark out! Helping each other play the right cards at the right time is the key to creating an unforgettable show, and avoid a fizzling fiasco! Game design by famed Seven Wonders designer, Antoine Bauza.

Okay, if you want to really put your brain to good use and have fun at the same time, this might be the game for you. You and the other players are fireworks experts who have mixed up the fireworks for a big show and need to get them back into order. You have a deck of cards with five colors of fireworks and the cards are numbered 1 - 5. The trick is to get the cards stacked up by color in numerical order from lowest to highest. BUT, the trick is, you can't look at your own cards! Every player has a hand of five cards that they turn out so that only the other players can see them and on your turn those players have to give you hints about what cards in your hand are either a certain color or a certain number. You have to remember what's what and try to play the right card in the right stack in the right order. Too many mistakes and everything blows up! At the end of the game, you count up the total score based on what cards were played correctly and see if your fireworks display was a hit or a dud. So, there's no real loss or victory, but it's great fun and the game comes in a small box that you can carry with you almost anywhere to play while you wait at a restaurant or at a bar, etc.
