Surprizingly good '50s 'war' film - Mitchum and Kerr give understated yet powerful performances in wonderful character studies in the midst of WWII. Although not explicit, and not the thrust of this film, there are more nuanced views of war to ponder for any adult. If you are more interested in action - this film has some great Pacific War island-hopping moments, including air, land, and sea (Air Force, Army, and Marines/Navy), and big explosions. Authentic period WWII touches (the rubber raft, web belts, uniforms, etc.) to ground this in reality. And a surprizing end -- especially considering the formula endings I see often nowadays. Goes to show you that each generation has had its share of good, solid, well-acted, stories captured on film. I'm ready to see this again already.
