"To you, perceptive reader, I bequeath my history..."

Late one night, exploring her father's library, a young woman finds an ancient book and a cache of yellowing letters. The letters are all addressed to "My dear and unfortunate successor," and they plunge her into a world she never dreamed of — a labyrinth where the secrets of her father's past and her mother's mysterious fate connect to an inconceivable evil hidden in the depths of history.

The letters provide links to one of the darkest powers that humanity has ever known — and to a centuries-long quest to find the source of that darkness and wipe it out. It is a quest for the truth about Vlad the Impaler, the medieval ruler whose barbarous reign formed the basis of the legend of Dracula. Generations of historians have risked their reputations, their sanity, and even their lives to learn the truth about Vlad the Impaler and Dracula. Now one young woman must decide whether to take up this quest herself — to follow her father in a hunt that nearly brought him to ruin years ago, when he was a vibrant young scholar and her mother was still alive.

What does the legend of Vlad the Impaler have to do with the modern world? Is it possible that the Dracula of myth truly existed — and that he has lived on, century after century, pursuing his own unknowable ends? The answers to these questions cross time and borders, as first the father and then the daughter search for clues, from dusty Ivy League libraries to Istanbul, Budapest, and the depths of Eastern Europe. In city after city, in monasteries and archives, in letters and in secret conversations, the horrible truth emerges about Vlad the Impaler's dark reign — and about a time-defying pact that may have kept his awful work alive down through the ages.

Parsing obscure signs and hidden texts, reading codes worked into the fabric of medieval monastic traditions — and evading the unknown adversaries who will go to any lengths to conceal and protect Vlad's ancient powers — one woman comes ever closer to the secret of her own past and a confrontation with the very definition of evil. Elizabeth Kostova's debut novel is an adventure of monumental proportions, a relentless tale that blends fact and fantasy, history and the present, with an assurance that is almost unbearably suspenseful — and utterly unforgettable.

Review

"Surpass[es] The Da Vinci Code in almost every aspect....It is an atmospheric thriller with an improbable-but-plausible plot, exotic locations, multidimensional characters and an engaging style that unobtrusively hooks and then reels in the reader." Denver Post

Review

"Readers who think the legend of Dracula has become a trite staple of schlock fiction will find this atmospheric page-turner...a bloodthirsty delight....Both literary and scary, this one is guaranteed to keep one reading into the wee hours..." Booklist (Starred Review)

Review

"Kostova may have outdone Stoker or even, for that matter, Hollywood's numerous Dracula reincarnations with her chilling revelation of what motivates her blood-thirsty monster. Before the sun sets, grab this book and take a long and satisfying drink." USA Today

Review

"The Historian is artfully constructed and atmospheric, yet nothing that happens in it is really all that surprising. Still, Elizabeth Kostova has produced an honorable summer book, reasonably well written and enjoyable and...very, very long..." The Washington Post

Review

"The Historian is intriguing for its thorough examination of what constitutes evil and why it exists....Kostova's thorough research and lively narrative will compel many in search of a good story, richly told and not soon forgotten." Chicago Tribune

Review

"[O]ne terrific and fascinating read....[A] must-read for anyone with even a pretense to loving the genre. Kostova's debut is indeed auspicious and the news that she is working on a second novel is welcome." The Baltimore Sun

Review

"[A] late-night page-turner that will be sure to make you lose some precious hours of sleep....Anyone who loves to become involved in the lives of fictional characters will find much to savor in this intricately plotted, delicately written novel." San Francisco Chronicle

Review

"[E]xceptionally well-written, with a particularly fine eye for descriptive detail....The Historian has the eye-catching premise, and Kostova's got the writing chops to deliver a novel that's equal to it." Dallas-Ft. Worth Star Telegram

Review

"The writing is excellent, and the pace is brisk, although it sags a bit in the middle. There is plenty of suspense so that readers will want to find out what happens next." Library Journal

Review

"The Historian isn't especially scary (though Kostova can work up a respectable miasma of dread when needed), and it lacks the inane but breathless chase scenes of The Da Vinci Code, but for the sophisticated reader it's a fine Bordeaux to Dan Brown's overcaffeinated Diet Coke....The big difference is that, unlike Brown's nattering cardboard people, by the end of Kostova's novel, the girl and the mother she lost as an infant have also become people worth caring about, tragic figures enmeshed with a treacherous past. That makes The Historian a thriller in more ways than one." Laura Miller, Salon.com (read the entire Salon.com review)

Synopsis

In this riveting debut of breathtaking scope, a young girl discovers her father's darkest secret and embarks on a harrowing journey across Europe to complete the quest he never could — to find history's most legendary fiend: Dracula.

When a motherless American girl living in Europe finds a medieval book and a package of letters, all addressed ominously to "My dear and unfortunate successor..." she begins to unravel a thread that leads back to her father's past, his mentor's career, and an evil hidden in the depths of history.

In those few quiet moments, she unwittingly assumes a quest she will discover is her birthright — a hunt that nearly brought her father to ruin and may have claimed the life of his adviser and dear friend, history professor Bartholomew Rossi. What does the legend of Vlad the Impaler, the historical Dracula, have to do with the 20th century? Is it possible that Dracula has lived on in the modern world? And why have a select few historians risked reputation, sanity, and even their lives to learn the answer?

So begins an epic journey to unlock the secrets of the strange medieval book, an adventure that will carry our heroine across Europe and into the past — not only to the times of Vlad's heinous reign, but to the days when her mother was alive and her father was still a vibrant young scholar. In the end, she uncovers the startling fate of Rossi, and comes face to face with the definition of evil — to find, ultimately, that good may not always triumph.

Synopsis

Breathtakingly suspenseful and beautifully written, The Historian is the story of a young woman plunged into a labyrinth where the secrets of her family's past connect to an inconceivable evil: the dark fifteenth-century reign of Vlad the Impaler and a time-defying pact that may have kept his awful work alive through the ages. The search for the truth becomes an adventure of monumental proportions, taking us from monasteries and dusty libraries to the capitals of Eastern Europe — in a feat of storytelling so rich, so hypnotic, so exciting that it has enthralled readers around the world.

I love this book, and I return to it again and again. Following the legend of Vlad the Impaler, the reader goes on a tour of Europe on the hunt for Dracula's tomb. I love that the vampire hunters are academics, searching through documents, maps, and libraries. This is not a vampire love story; it is well-crafted thriller, filled with European lore.

I am sure that people are going to get tired of hearing me rave about this book but I just really don’t care…this is hands down the most fantastic Dracula story I have ever read. Recently I went to see Dracula Untold and was again reminded of it. In review of both this book and that movie, you hear people compare it to Bram Stokers Dracula. I get it but neither is about Dracula…they are about Vlad. This book had me so captivated from the very beginning. The very best part of historical fiction to me is a writer that can so adequately weave actual fact into their fiction that it is difficult to pull the parts back out. This is one of those books. Kostova does such a great job of making you want to know so much more about the man that became the legend that you hardly realize where you end up. I could read it again and again. That reminds me, WHEN IS THIS GOING TO BE A MOVIE?!?!

Such a different take on the entire vampire genre! The switch between father and daughter's voices is smooth and you almost don't realize the change... Enthralling and thrilling, it grips the reader and creates a desire for more. Forget romanticized vampire stories and grab this one and delve into a world of intrigue!

Not quite as "literary" as I expected and hoped but conversely much more suspenseful and thrilling than I had dared to expect. A cracking read for lovers of gothic fiction.

The tale of The Historian is told by a sixteen year old girl raised as a privileged and protected diplomat's daughter. As she accompanies her father on his research and diplomatic missions through Europe, we learn that her father has a dark and painful secret that is somehow tied to the myth of the vampire Drakula or Vlad Tepes of Wallachia and the disappearance of his beloved advisor Professor Rossi. As she tries to coax the story from him, the book shifts perspective and we read of his adventures from his own voice. Occasionally, the story of the search for Drakula is told through the voice of Oxford professor Rossi. Through carefully woven narratives from these three characters and from the letters and journal entries, we are taken into a dark and mysterious world where a centuries old evil continues to reign. As the journey takes us from the libraries of Oxford, America, and Constantinople to remote towns in Hungary and Eastern Europe in search for the missing Professor Rossi, the story becomes one of courage, friendship, and a long abiding love. Suspenseful and carefully crafted, The Historian evokes the leisurely prose of classics of the genre. An unusual read, I am very much looking forward to Elizabeth Kostova's next novel, The Swan Thieves, which comes out in January 2010. Publisher: Back Bay Books; Reprint edition (September 1, 2009), 720 pages. Review copy provided by the publisher.

A must read for history lovers. The ten years of research done by Elizabeth Kostova is obvious is in every chapter of the book. The warmth and love she put into this masterpiece will leave you wondering how anyone could be so brilliant. The story begins to be told by a 16 year old girl and gradually brings in the other people that looked mythology in the face. If your not a history lover yet this book might very well be the one that will leave you hooked. Briliant book. It's Dracula by Bram Stoker; endulged in class, eloquence and caffeine.

I really liked this book especially because of its powerful images....what really lingered in my mind was an image of our hero standing "on top of the world" at the end of the book. The way the story is presented to a reader, mix of generations and beautiful descriptions of Balkan are what kept me wide awake throughout the book...all in all very interesting piece of writing

I loved this book! It took me only 3 days to read it. I just couldn't put it down. The way that the writer mixed together history, legend and even romance was unsurpassed. I would even say that this book was better than the DaVinci Code. Two thumbs up!

Epistolary novels are not easy to pull off, but "The Historian" is a ripping good story. There's always the danger that the reader will feel removed from the action -- what's at stake? We know that the letter-writer survived, so who cares? But Kostova is a really good writer, so we care about the characters. On the other hand, if you love that other vampire writer (her name rhymes with "Ice") you might not like this book.
