At the heart of The Husbands Secret is a letter thats not meant to be read

My darling Cecilia, if youre reading this, then Ive died. . .

Imagine that your husband wrote you a letter, to be opened after his death. Imagine, too, that the letter contains his deepest, darkest secret—something with the potential to destroy not just the life you built together, but the lives of others as well. Imagine, then, that you stumble across that letter while your husband is still very much alive. . . .

Cecilia Fitzpatrick has achieved it all—shes an incredibly successful businesswoman, a pillar of her small community, and a devoted wife and mother. Her life is as orderly and spotless as her home. But that letter is about to change everything, and not just for her: Rachel and Tess barely know Cecilia—or each other—but they too are about to feel the earth-shattering repercussions of her husbands secret.

"Brilliant." —Sophia Hannah, international bestselling author of The Wrong Mother

“I really enjoyed The Husbands Secret, and raced right through it in two days. Its a knowing, touching, and entertaining page-turner. What a wonderful writer—smart, wise, funny.” —Anne Lamott

"Liane Moriarty (What Alice Forgot) is far more than the skillful writer of potboilers. Her compelling characters could be your friends and neighbors, nice and neurotic in equal doses. . . . Amid three intertwined story lines and terrific plot twists, Moriarty presents a nuanced and moving portrait of the meaning of love, both marital and familial, and how life can hinge on a misunderstanding or a decision made in haste. The Husband's Secret is so good, you won't be able to keep it to yourself." —USA Today

“Reading groups rejoice. This meaty novel from the bestselling author (The Hypnotists Love Story, What Alice Forgot) will probably land on many must-read lists.” —Dallas-Fort Worth Star-Telegram

“The Husband's Secret is a smart, thoughtful read… [a] lip-smacking and intelligently written novel.” —Entertainment Weekly (A-)

"Simultaneously a page-turner and a book one has to put down occasionally to think about and absorb, Moriarty's novel challenges the reader as well as her characters, but in the best possible way." —Publishers Weekly"At first, this reviewer wanted to warn readers not to be taken in by the light tone of Liane Moriarty's The Husband's Secret. On second thought, maybe readers should let this rather crafty novelist's deceptive breeziness and humor sweep them along. It makes the shocks just that much more deliciously nasty, including the gob-smacking twist in the epilogue. . . . The genius of The Husband's Secret is that it makes us start to wonder what in our own lives would—or would not—have happened if, say, we had waited just five more minutes before we walked out the door, had not said that hurtful thing, had applied a bit of logic to that situation." —Bookpage

“Secrets can be sinister; they can eat you alive. But they can also set you free. The Husbands Secret by Liane Moriarty demonstrates this power with one of the most entertaining stories I have read in ages. Perfect for book clubs—lots to debate in these pages. I just loved it.” —Dorothea Benton Frank, New York Times-bestselling author of The Last Original Wife

"Moriarty may be an edgier, more provocative and bolder successor to Maeve Binchy." —Kirkus Reviews, starred review

"For a provocative page-turner, read The Husband's Secret by Liane Moriarty." —Woman's World

Praise for What Alice Forgot and The Hypnotist's Love Story

“Mesmerizing.” —Family Circle

“Superb . . . examines misunderstandings—not just with lovers, but with friends, families and, perhaps most often, ourselves.” —Parade

“Absorbing . . . thought-provoking.” —Ladies Home Journal

“Spellbinding! Reading Liane Moriarty is like spending the afternoon with a wise, witty, comforting friend. I could not put it down!” —Beth Harbison, author of Always Something there to Remind Me

“What Alice Forgot grabbed me on the first page and pulled me into Alices life. She is strong, wounded, determined, and living a mystery. There is tender love entwined with poignant loss, magical confusion reminiscent of another Alice and her wonderland. Liane Moriarty has written a deep and wondrous novel.” —Luanne Rice, New York Times-bestselling author

“Heartfelt … and thought-provoking, What Alice Forgot is a story you'll remember long after you turn the last page.” —Jennifer Crusie, New York Times-bestselling author

“I loved this book. It has, for me, everything that makes a good novel excellent: A delightful protagonist and her equally delightful love trying to overcome obstacles they do not fully understand; several fascinating families all jumbled into an iconoclastic mix; good friends and peculiar neighbors and difficult children and wonderfully loving relationships. A book about a decision made innocently by teenagers haunts the lives of others. The title sounds like a cliche but it is a completely engrossing, smartly written book. It has three sets of family situations that circle each other, then connect and finally resolve in a "didn't see it coming" ending. Moriarty is an accomplished weaver of family lives based on threads of assumption, which slowly unravel to create a masterpiece.

Cecilia reads a letter that her husband had left for her to open after his death; she reads it while he is alive - what a Pandora's Box! The contents affect him, her, Rachel, Connor and consequently Tess.Moriarty has skillfully woven a poignant tale where one commiserates with John Paul and Cecilia without condoning their actions. How will justice be done? Reading through the book breathlessly is the only way to find out! -

I mostly wanted to read this story to learn about the secret. I had to know. As I went along in the book, it became less important about the actual secret. I wanted to know how the three main women and how all the people in their lives would deal with the news of the secret. I was surprised I hadn’t been spoiled about the secret before I had a chance to read the book, but I think the reason was that isn’t the main point of the book. It is really about how this secret has shaped the lives of these people and how learning about it affects other people. It really shatters reality for some people and reading about how they deal with it is what kept me reading.

"The Husband's Secret" is a compelling, finely observed novel. Juicier than most fiction I've read lately. Liane Moriarty gets so much right about competitive school moms, about the banality of married life, about the little hurts and insecurities we all nurse in private. She manages to wrestle with some big ethical dilemmas in a surprisingly satisfying way, too.

Have you ever read a choose-your-own-adventure novel? Well, this book is like a series of choose-your-own-adventure options put together. It makes you think, 'What if...?' Moriarty's writing is fresh and witty. I can't say that I particularly loved any of the characters, but they're real--likable yet flawed.

The Lost Entwife , August 11, 2013 (view all comments by The Lost Entwife)
I’ll be the first to admit it; I did not want to read this book. The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty screams women’s fiction and, frankly, I’ve not been in the mood lately. But then, I started reading buzz on Twitter and it sounded interesting enough for me to check out the synopsis and next thing you know, I’m hitting the request button and putting it on the top of my TBR pile. So was all of that justified? Yes. Yes, it was. Because y’all, I could not put this one down. You see, the secret in the synopsis is just one of many and frankly, this book had me freaking out more and more as it progressed. There are hints dropped here and there about what the book has in store for you, but as I was reading I just filed those away as ambiance, as something to just enrich the reading experience. But then, Moriarty (brilliant name for what I’m about to say here) began pulling the strings together and knitting pieces of the story into a tightly-woven, fantastically layered bit of maniacal genius that had me blinking and saying.. uh, what? And then, there’s the epilogue. Just one hit after another after another of things that had happened, that could have happened, that didn’t happen " you name it. Basically, everything you think through when you finish a book but you never receive answers to? Moriarty gives you those answers and she is brutal with the honesty of them. I was reeling when I finished the last page and I understood then what all the buzz was about. So if you, like me, just are not inclined to read anything labeled “women’s fiction,” I suggest you let Moriarty change your mind. There’s mystery, heart and soul, and gritty, real life in the pages of The Husband’s Secret. It would make a fantastic book club read, but don’t let that define the book for you. Read it and then make your judgement from there.

Silvers Reviews , July 31, 2013 (view all comments by Silvers Reviews)
A simple letter, but was it really that simple? A letter written long ago. A letter indicating it was not allowed to be opened. A letter that made John Paul’s wife, Cecelia, quite curious. What harm would be done by opening the letter? Cecelia was dying to open it, but the message John-Paul wrote on the front of the envelope said it could not be opened until his death. When Cecilia asked her husband about it, he said he had been sentimental when he wrote it, and that she should just put it away. Obediently Cecilia, the good wife, put it away without opening it. Hints about the contents of the letter will peak your curiosity as it did Cecelia’s. When she did open the letter and found out what John-Paul had written, she couldn't believe it. How could this be true? Cecelia the perfect wife and fixer of everything couldn't fix this. Cecelia was the perfect wife, mother, and town citizen. She knew everyone in town, and she knew everything about the city residents. She remembered Tess when she came back to her childhood town because her husband didn't love her any more. Rachel was also part of Cecelia's circle. Rachel had a few heartbreaking situations in the past. But…what Cecelia found in that letter was going to be more than a heartbreak for Rachel. THE HUSBAND'S SECRET was focused on this letter, Tess, Rachel and Cecilia. The letter’s secret had to do with an unknown connection between Tess, Cecelia, and Rachel and something that happened in the past that linked them together and something in the present that caused more heartache and pain. When the book begins, you will think it is going to be a book about a husband’s affair, but it is more sinister than that. It actually is a tragic secret. THE HUSBAND’S SECRET is about more than keeping secrets, though. It deals with a parent’s love for his/her child and about the lengths parents go to in order to protect their children. It deals with right and wrong, and it deals with the thought - do we really know our spouse or significant other? Don’t be mislead into thinking it is simply a book about secrets between a husband and his wife. It is far more than that. It is a book about secrets whether they are large or small and about our decisions to reveal the secret or to not reveal the secret. THE HUSBAND’S SECRET is an excellent read that will keep you pondering life, pondering the decisions we make, and thinking about the secrets most of us have. What is your secret? 5/5 This book was given to me free of charge and without compensation by the publisher and LibraryThing in exchange for an honest review.
