I was led to the Austrian writer Stefan Zweig because he was cited as an influence for one of my favorite films of last year, "The Grand Budapest Hotel." Born into a wealthy Jewish family, he fled Europe after the rise of the Nazis and eventually settled in Brazil, where he and his wife killed themselves in 1942. This novella wasn't published until after his death. Also see "The Post -Office Girl" and "Chess Story." "He is the master of hidden impulses, of passionate excess, of l'amour fou, of desires that run amuck. . ."-from the introduction
