Synopsis

In Journeys North, legendary trail angel, thru hiker, and former PCTA board member Barney Scout Mann spins a compelling tale of six hikers on the Pacific Crest Trail in 2007 as they walk from Mexico to Canada. This ensemble story unfolds as these half-dozen hikers--including Barney and his wife, Sandy--trod north, slowly forming relationships and revealing their deepest secrets and aspirations. They face a once-in-a-generation drought and early severe winter storms that test their will in this bare-knuckled adventure. In fact, only a third of all the hikers who set out on the trail that year would finish.

As the group approaches Canada, a storm rages. How will these very different hikers, ranging in age, gender, and background, respond to the hardship and suffering ahead of them? Can they all make the final 60-mile push through freezing temperatures, sleet, and snow, or will some reach their breaking point?

Journeys North is a story of grit, compassion, and the relationships people forge when they strive toward a common goal.

I wasn't sure if this book would "wow" me because I've saturated myself with too many other hiking books, but I was soooo wrong. This book wrapped me up & would not let go! I got so caught up in everyone's stories that I found myself wondering how they were doing in between readings! I didn't even think it was possible to cry or laugh like this reading a book about thru-hiking! It was so much more than a hiker's book, or a "how-to-guide" about thru-hiking, or reading someone's hiking diary. It's about hikers, and people, and resilience, and kindness, and luck, and revering mother nature, and connection, and putting one foot in front of another, even if those feet are covered in snow & blisters. This book would be a great gift for people who love hiking, or love other people who love hiking, or for people who are curious as to why people hike or thru-hike in the first place. Or a great gift for yourself because you love fantastically written books. Just do it. Buy this book. I dare you not to try to read it all in one setting.

Journeys North made me laugh, cry, and feel hopeful about humanity. The story is centered on people's stories as much as the trail. I have read many books about long distance hiking, but Journeys North stands out because it is about 6 hikers' stories rather than just the author's. I believe everyone will enjoy this book, whether you are a hiker or not. I thru-hiked the Pacific Crest Trail in 2018 and I was so excited to share this book with my family, because it helped them understand why I was out there. I can't recommend Journeys North enough!

I can't recommend this book enough. I'm a "repeat offender" thru-hiker, having walked from Mexico to Canada three full times. I love trail culture and I enjoy reading about the experiences of others. It's in sharing the stories of others where Journeys North shines. The vast majority of trail memoirs read like a simple log book of one person's miles. Journeys North is nothing like that. Scout tells the story of many people and tells how those stories interweave with his and his wife's without drowning them out. It's an emotional read but it's also educational and informative. Journeys North is the kind of Pacific Crest Trail story that stands on its own merits and would be enjoyable to both hikers and non-hikers alike. If you want to relieve some of the cabin fever of the pandemic and step into another world where nature and the human spirit combine, pick up Journeys North.

It's incredible how Barney brings the trail, and the stories of these hikers that blaze it, to life through beautifully written prose and heartfelt narration. I'm thoroughly enjoying every bit of this book and the fact that I have running water!

Better than Wild and not just for backpackers. Join the community of PCT thru-hikers as Scout takes us along for the adventure. Not necessarily a story of the hike itself, more a telling of how a cast of diverse characters come together, disperse, come together again, add members, lose members each with their own fascinating story. We meet Scout, Frodo, Blazer, Figaro, Nadine & Pacha, Tony and many others and some amazing other folks they encounter as they all come together. Quick easy read. Just the tonic for this crazy divided time we are in. Chemrunner57
