Gershom Scholem's huge "Kabbalah" [512 pages] was not written as a book. It is actually a collection of crisp articles that he wrote for the Encylopedia Judaica that are concerned with the Kabbalah and its practioners. Scholem pioneered the academic study of Jewish mysticism. He wrote many major studies on Kabbalah in German, Hebrew, and English and taught at Hebrew University for many years.
