It's been a long time since I've enjoyed fiction this much. A really, really long time. Maybe since RAH left us. I'm writing this hours after finishing "The Last Colony," the last in the trilogy started with "Old Man's War." I've recommended these books to dozens of people now. Why? There are two fundamental reasons. For one, Scalzi is an incredibly good writer. His prose moves forward and inexorably draws you with it. His writing style helps you conveniently forget the fact that you just spent an hour, or two or three or more hours living in the world he creates. And what a world! The story is involved but not confusing - Scalzi knows just how many balls to keep in the air at once. Each book can stand on its own but, for the reader who will begin at the beginning, there are gems others will miss. One of those in this final book, a small but very meaningful reference, brought tears to my eyes. This is a very human story, that does not lose its humanity in its rich portrayal of a complex society and its enabling technology. Scalzi creates a universe where big social and political issues are front and center, but never steps up on a soapbox. That is incredibly refreshing. This is science fiction for the thinking AND feeling reader. In case I haven't made my point, I really liked this book - and the two that came before it. I'm looking forward to seeing what else Mr. Scalzi offers us.
